From Penny's Hill, the people who made the very popular Cracking Black Shiraz, comes a UK exclusive for Vivino, the 2014 Stirling Moss 'White Helmet' McLaren Vale Grenache!

Tony Parkinson, the founder of Penny's Hill, is a car enthusiast and having met and enjoyed many discussions with Sir Stirling Moss, they decided to create a joint venture using the lovely wines produced at Penny's Hill. Thus the 'Stirling Moss' range of wines was born. Tony's sister-in-law, Penny Dowie, a noted portrait artist, was engaged to render images of Moss at the wheel during the golden era for the labels.

The White Helmet Grenache label features Sir Stirling's emphatic win at Monaco on May 13th, 1956 whilst driving a Maserati 250F. The liquid inside is from Penny's Hill superb old-vine grenache called the Experiment which receives extremely high praise from the wine writers. Full-bodied yet retaining that grenache suppleness, it is bursting with ripe fruit - perfect McLaren Vale Grenache.

This is a great chance to purchase a unique and rare wine created in conjunction with one of Britain's greatest sporting heroes!

About the wine

An aromatic, complex nose of floral notes combines with bucket loads of ripe red and dark berry fruit, and hints of cherry, walnut, and a touch of earthiness. There is a beautiful balance between tannins, fruit and acidity, which renders this a seamless, elegant wine with a long finish.

The old-vine grenache fruit was hand picked and open fermented using 20% whole bunches. Gentle hand plunging and 14 days on skins ensured optimum balance between flavour and tannin extraction before pressing and maturation in old French Hogsheads for 12 months. The barrels remained on lees with regular topping to encourage texture and complexity and to preserve and respect the delicate nature of this parcel of old-vine grenache.

About the winery

As the land acquired in 1988 for the establishment of vineyards by Tony & Susie Parkinson sat on foothills at the base of Penny’s Hill, east of McLaren Vale, that name stuck. In 1991, they planted the initial narrow rows of Shiraz, aimed at minimum crops for maximum quality, and with the 1995 vintage the decision was made to bottle and label a small quantity of wine under the distinctive ‘red dot’ packaging. Behind the slogan “Proudly Australian. more so McLaren Vale”, Penny’s Hill is now an established premium estate producer of award-winning, fruit driven wines which reflect the outstanding diversity of terroir upon which McLaren Vale has grown its reputation.

About the vineyard

The sites for vines at Penny’s Hill were very carefully chosen and planted with an eye to quality, not quantity. The grenache is the result of careful canopy management of an exclusive 1.9 acre site on shallow soils, which results in low yields of highly concentrated fruit. With two vines per panel, planted almost together and crossed deliberately at the first wire, vigour is contained and concentration enhanced. Sourced from ancient, pre-clonal Grenache reared to the north of the Vales, the plot is almost dry grown.

About the winemaker

Alexia Roberts has been making wine in McLaren Vale for over 10 years; prior to that she travelled extensively in the world of wine. A relatively recent arrival at Penny’s Hill, Alexia has already created many award-winning wines. She has a passion for Shiraz and Grenache, key varieties at Penny’s Hill. Working closely with owner Tony Parkinson, she makes fruit-driven, elegant and refined wines, which are great reflections of individual vineyard plots. She’s keen to place an emphasis on the exciting differences between their various parcels of vines.

"It feels velvety as it rolls across the tongue and offers plenty of licorice and dark berried flavours. It's a crowd pleaser, with integrity, and deserves to be lapped up as a result"
94 Points, James Halliday

"This is a prime example of McLaren Vale Grenache. It's full-bodied and supple in feel, yet structured enough to support a fruit bowl of plums, raspberries and cherries. Clove and cinnamon notes add complexity to the fruit-filled finish"
93 Points, Wine Enthusiast - Editors's Choice

robert-parker-logo.jpg"Pale to medium garnet-purple in color, the 2014 The Experiment Grenache offers beautiful floral notes of violets and roses with a core of black forest gateau and star anise, plus some garrigue and earth hints. Medium to full bodied, it absolutely packs in the flavor layered with baking spices coming through on the palate, plus a good taut backbone to support, finishing with a refreshing lift."

Other Offers

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
