"One of the world’s leading wine estates." Robert Parker

Torbreck have long been at the forefront of serious Aussie Shiraz, sourcing top-quality Shiraz fruit from some of Barossa’s most exciting and oldest vineyards to make magnificent, critically-acclaimed wines!

These old vine beauties, avidly collected by their many followers, have placed them at the forefront of Aussie winemakers.

So we are pleased to offer one of their most popular wines, The Struie, from the excellent 2012 vintage - but even more pleasing is that we can offer a rare parcel of half bottles!

This Struie combines the more delicate Eden Valley shiraz with the powerful fruit of the Barossa, resulting in an extremely elegant red that has a heart-warming richness of fruit and a velvety smooth texture. Whilst this would need a few more years in full bottles, it is drinking perfectly from halves...

Make sure you don't miss out on this rare chance to pick up a mature Australian great in handy half bottles!

About the wine

Torbreck's wines have always been something special.

Using small parcels of old vines that yield fruit of extraordinary concentration, their skill lies in turning this concentration into wines of unbridled power combined with outstanding finesse and balance. Barossa blockbusters with a European sensibility, you might say. Think Rhône Valley meets old-vine Barossa!

Named after a hill that rises above the Glenmorangie distillery, The Struie sources shiraz fruit from the high altitudes of Eden Valley that gives the wine delicate spice, white pepper and fruit characters. Meanwhile, the Barossa element lends a richer, deeper, more brooding flavour and intensity. Together, they make shiraz magic, being both very intense and brightly peppery. Superbly focused, with pure fruit and layers of flavour that combine with silky smooth tannins, this superb Aussie wine is great drinking right now.

About the winery

Torbreck Vintners was founded by David Powell, who, in 1992, had begun to discover and clean up a few sections of dry-grown old vines. He nurtured these near lifeless vines back to health and was rewarded with a few small parcels that he made into wine.

David managed to raise enough money to ‘share-farm’ a run-down but ancient shiraz vineyard; a practice which involves paying the owner a percentage of the market rate for his grapes in return for totally managing the vineyard. This way of operating has allowed Torbreck to use fruit from the very best vineyards in the Barossa Valley. One of the many reasons they are considered to be one of Australia's best wineries.

A new winery and administration facility was completed in 2008 on land acquired from a neighbour. This has allowed Torbreck to have complete control of all aspects of the work in both the vineyard and winery. At this time Torbreck was purchased by Pete Knight.

About the vineyard

The Struie is a blend of Shiraz from an 80 year old Barossa vineyard and a 40 year old Eden Valley vineyard.

The Eden Valley is a high-altitude area of between 400 and 500 metres, compared with the Barossa Valley’s elevation of 200 to 300 metres. This higher altitude and 1 to 2 weeks later ripening pattern results in more distinctive varietal flavour characteristics, lower pH and higher acidities. This adds elegnce to the Barossa intensity.

"A blend of Barossa and Eden Valleys. An extremely powerful and complex wine..."
94 Points - James Halliday

"This is excellent, with a beautiful depth of fruit, spice and meat, and wet-earth undertones. Such much blackberry and currant, too. Full body with firm, silky tannins and a long finish. Refined and well-crafted..."
94 Points - James Suckling

"Deep, dark red colour with a tingle of purple still persisting. Charred oak, smoky toasted barrel and chocolate aromas. The palate is very rich, concentrated and dense, with powerful plum to prune flavours, and a great deal of impact. A very big, assertive wine, but it also retains pleasing balance. The tannins are ample and smooth. I really like the combination of richness, power and balance here."
93 Points - Huon Hooke

"The 2012 The Struie has a deep garnet-purple color and notes of baked cherries, dried mulberries, prunes and dried herbs with hints of menthol and pepper. Very big, full and concentrated in the mouth, the flavors are evolving and expanding gracefully, framed by chewy tannins and ample freshness, finishing long.
92 Points - Wine Advocate

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
