Today's 2012 Shay's Flat Shiraz brings the best of classic Rhône Syrah to meet Australia's opulence.

The result is wonderful.  Perfect for this time of year and great value at under £20 per bottle!

Michel Chapoutier is a towering figure in the wine world, a true wine-making genius. Not content with making multiple 100 point wines in the Northern Rhône , he has begun to apply his skills anywhere he believes the terroir is perfect for making world-class wines. He has a nose for great, forgotten vineyards, and the wines he coaxes from these sites never fail to astound.

Michel's pioneering spirit drove him to explore some of the world’s oldest terroir in Australia, and after much searching, Domaine Tournon – named after the town of Tournon, on the other bank of the Rhône river to Tain l’Hermitage – was founded in 2009.

Every vintage since then has seen an improvement as Michel grows to understand the land - the result is exceptional Shiraz wines, displaying great elegance and mineral purity.

Were this wine being made in the Northern Rhône, it would be selling at 3 to 4 times the cost, so make sure you don't miss out!

About the wine

This is a very classy Shiraz that wouldn't be out of place in the Northern Rhone! A deep, dark red on pouring, a complex nose of black fruits (cherry, blackberry) with hints of tobacco and spice jumps out of the glass. More black fruit and liquorice on the palate balance with supple and delicate tanninsPowerful, rich but balanced, this would be a perfect match with steak or rack of lamb.

Made from vines planted on red podzolic soils overlying a soil of iron schists and quartz. The grapes are harvested at maturity, avoiding over maturation before being destemmed and fermented in concrete or stainless steel tanks. A long maceration (from 3 to 5 weeks) and a gentle work on the marc allow the extraction of fine and elegant tannins.

About the vineyard

Located in the undulating Pyrenees Hills in Victoria, Michel found two vineyards – Shays Flat and Landsborough – which hold underlying schist soils where Shiraz vines thrive, producing elegant wines of great mineral purity. As a Southern extension of the Great Dividing Range, the foothills and ranges here create a remarkable diversity of microclimates and soils that provide winemakers with a wealth of variety.

Shay’s Flat is produced on an east facing ridge in the southern foothills. It appears as a natural amphitheatre with red soils of schist, quartz and rich clay. The vineyard features ten hectares of shiraz in two parcels

About the winemaker

Michel Chapoutier is the sort of man about which books could be written!  Since taking control of the family firm in 1990 (and immediately sacking family members working there), he has revolutionised the production of wine from his sites, not only in the Rhône, but now his plantings stretch from the Douro, to Italy and Alsace.

He is a consummate professional when it comes to his trade, and is a firm believer in letting the terroir speak: “I do not try to create the perfect wine, but to take snapshots of the terroir”.  It just so happens that in doing so, he does create near perfection! He is beyond a doubt one of France's greatest winemakers

"...the world’s leading, irreverent genius in winemaking and winemaking philosophy" Robert Parker

94 Points - James Halliday

"A full-blooded and bodied estate-grown shiraz; the colour is deep, the black fruits with a structure and texture more often encountered in cabernet sauvignon; there are strong savoury/earthy components that need to soften their grip."

"This spectacular Australian red wine features pepper, dark spice and black fruit on the nose. Gorgeous concentration here! Black and dark red fruit mingle with the pepper, dark spices and brooding mystery. What an incredible wine. It's produced by a classic and respected Rhone Valley winery Chapoutier. This wine combines the concentration and lusciousness of Australian fruit with the finesse, balance and elegance of Rhone Valley reds."

93 Points - The Wine Front

"Shiraz from the Pyrenees region of Victoria, under the guidance of team Chapoutier. Aged mostly in French oak but with a portion kept in tank, in the aim to promote fruit freshness. It’s a beautiful style of shiraz. Meaty, clovey, peppery and well fruited, the savoury/spicy aspects clear but not dominant. The fruit sings, the peppers rhythm it up. Smoky, floral and slightly reductive through the finish, in a positive way. Finely tannic. Balance is a key feature. Excellent all over."

91+ Points - Lisa Perrotti-Brown
"Medium to deep garnet-purple, the 2012 Shay’s Flat Vineyard Pyrenees Shiraz opens with a slight whiff of reduction over a core of red and black currants, loam, sage and Szechuan pepper. Tight, muscular and with a just a tad too much extraction detracting from its savory appeal ever so slightly, it finishes long and earthy."

"Big inky blackberry...softens to black cherry with a big mid palate kick of pepper and spice. Soft silky tannins but still quite big. Excellent finish for the price."  4/5 Stars

"...completely surprised by this fine, elegant, soft, fresh, very tasty wine! If this had been made in the Rhône it would have been far more expensive....Licorice, salty, intensity, perfectly integrated. Impressive and nice to drink even. Now, but will improve"  4/5 Stars

"Medium garnet color, med aroma intensity of cedar, chocolate, red cherry, black cherry, vanilla, toast, smoke, forest floor, developing. Palate is dry, med+ tannin, med acid, med alcohol, med intensity of wood, tobacco, black cherry, vanilla, nutmeg, forest floor, med finish. Very good, drink now, potential for aging"  4/5 Stars

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
