On offer for £15.75 is this delicious malbec from the Trapiche stable!

It’s an Argentine gem with a host of top scores from critics on both sides of the Atlantic.

The Perfiles range is all about showing off the top regions and terroirs in Mendoza. Calcareo is – as you might guess – a wine made from grapes grown on chalky soils at high (1,300 metre) altitude in the Gualtallary region, which Argentine winemakers feel is amongst the country’s very best spots for grape growing.

It is a red wine with a truly dynamic feel; the fruit is rich and ripe but there’s a bright backbone of acidity and well-integrated chewy tannins that give verve and structure. The oak adds spice and smoke but it’s a light touch. The overall impression is of a long-lived, very elegant wine.

We think Calcareo really shines at its brightest when served with food and whilst red meat dishes are both obvious and delicious choices, you can equally keep the washing-up to a minimum and serve it with a hunk of top-quality cheddar with a spot of dried fruit.

In awarding the wine 92 points, James Suckling praises the wine’s, “spice, stone, chalk and berry character”.

This is a lot of wine for the price and we think it makes for an excellent buy!

About the wine

The Perfiles project is Trapiche showing the world the potential of Mendoza’s varied terroirs and soils and to profile the diversity and elegance of Argentina’s wines.

Calcareo is a lively, vibrant malbec from fruit sourced from vines planted on chalk soils at more than 1,300 meters above sea level. Here the vines fight to survive in what are fairly extreme conditions, but the effort yields hugely expressive fruit that has a spicy, graphite chalkiness and a seductive violet fragrance.

The wine has a lovely juicy texture with dark berry and black cherry fruits and the oak influence is restrained and elegant. Very much a food wine, this is just a brilliant malbec.

The fruit for this wine is harvested by hand following a process of careful bunch selection. After destemming, the juice undergoes fermentation initiated by natural yeasts in small concrete vats for a period of 15-18 days at 23°-25°C. Malolactic fermentation takes place in French oak barrels of 60 hl capacity for 6 months.

About the winery

Trapiche is one of the oldest wine estates in Argentina and was one of the first to export its wines. Their story began in 1883, in a small vineyard called El Trapiche in Mendoza, where the grapes for the first wines were grown.

Led by winemaker Daniel Pi, Trapiche sources premium grapes from Argentina’s best winegrowing sites, including more than 2,400 acres of proprietary vineyards and a stable of more than 200 independent growers. Driven by quality, innovation and diversity, Pi and his team utilize winemaking practices that coax the finest and truest expressions from each varietal.

The winery is a Florentine style building, built in 1912 and located in Maipú, Mendoza at the foot of the Andes.

About the vineyard

Gualtallary is part of the Uco Valley in Mendoza and it is considered by many in Argentina to be one of the best winemaking regions in the country due to the cool climate, concentration of limestone and altitude.

The Trapiche vineyards are planted at 1,300 meters on soils that are rich in calcium carbonate - perfect for Malbec! The wines from here are vibrant and fresh with exceptional aromatic complexity and good natural acidity.

Trapiche adopt biodynamic practices in their vineyards.

90 Points - Wine Enthusiast

"Mixed black-fruit aromas include spicy oak accents. A plump, seemingly on-the-spot palate holds flavors of plum, berry, fresh tomato and herbs. This Malbec is a touch meaty-tasting on the finish while avoiding heavy oak. It's a wine that's good for all palates, wine novices and experts alike"

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
