“This peerless winemaker has surpassed himself with recent vintages.” Michel Bettane, The World’s Greatest Wines

Jean-Marie Guffens, who heads up Domaine Verget is a character. Out-spoken and iconoclastic he may be, but he makes some brilliant white wines across Burgundy.

His watchword is purity and it is found in spades in all of his beautiful wines. Piercingly bright and pure, his wines have an intensity and depth that many other white Burgundies can only dream about.

Having trawled the vineyards of Burgundy looking for the best parcels of grapes, in Chablis he came across a small plot of 50 year old vines called “Minots”, in the premier cru vineyards of Vaillons, from which he creates wines with the benchmark saline and mineral qualities Chablis is famous for - along with a terrific concentration of pure fruit.

2015 was a great vintage for Verget and the result is a perfectly balanced Chablis with spice, minerality and fruit all neatly and refreshingly woven together. Top stuff!

At just £27.45, this is incredible value for a Premier Cru Chablis from a brilliant winemaker!

"...these are white wines made with the kind of ravishing purity, compelling sensual austerity more familiar among the greatest winemakers of the Saar, the Ruwer, or Alsace." Andrew Jefford

About the wine

A greenish-yellow in the glass with flashes of gold, this great Chablis opens with a smoky nose, pure lemon fruit with a touch of something more tropical and a distinctive spicy and mineral quality. The palate is full and concentrated with more fresh citrus fruit and a chalky texture that gives the wine added body. The powerful fruit is balanced by a crisp acidity that persists throughout the long, almost saline finish. A wine with all the hallmarks of top quality Chablis but with the added bonus of great fruit concentration and texture from the excellent vintage.

In 2015 the yields were low, at just 25 hl\ha. The resulting concentration of the juice allowed for vinification to take place in barrel (previously used), after which the wine was matured in concrete tanks, on its lees for seven months.

About the winery

Jasper Morris MW has said of Domaine Verget, “across the board his wines have a purity of fruit distinctiveness and, most importantly, they fully reflect their viticultural origins. The secret is in the fruit – he [Jean-Marie Guffens] insists on extremely low yields and the grapes being harvested at the point of optimum ripeness. In the winery, a policy of minimal handling and meticulous attention to detail is followed.”

Domaine Verget is a négociant in Burgundy, created by Jean-Marie Guffens, a Belgian who settled in the region. In 1991, he built a very modern winery in the Mâconnais where the Montbrison wine is made. Since then he has become the leading light in the Maconnais, producing wines that stand alongside and often above their grander cousins from the Cote d'Or.

Not willing to stop there he now roves Burgundy looking for small parcels of vines he can use to create first class white Burgundy.

About the vineyard

Minots is a small parcel of 50 year old vines in the Premier Cru vineyard, Vaillons. Located on the left bank, the site is rich in the famous kimmeridgean soils of Chablis that contains many millions of marine fossils that give the wines such a unique flavour.

94 points - Derek Smedley MW
"Smoky and spicy, fragrant orange blossom the nose has a complex mix. The palate has tropical fruits and pear depth of flavour. Fresh at the back apple and lime, the finish is long with flint and slate."

90 points - Allen Meadows
"Here the ripe yet cool nose evinces much more obvious Chablis character with its array of mineral reduction, iodine, floral and white orchard fruit aromas. The obvious ripeness continues onto the succulent, intense and seductively textured medium-bodied flavours where hints of salinity and minerality help to add lift to the balanced finish that is both more complex and persistent."

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
