The "wine of kings and the king of wines", Barolo is one of the world's great wine styles.

So we are very pleased to offer this simply outstanding Barolo Bussia from Ghisolfi. At the fantastic price of just £28.45 per bottle, we think you’d be hard pushed to find another Barolo of this quality at such a price!

Ghisolfi may fly somewhat under the radar, but that's because very few of the bottles make it out of Italy, such is the dedicated legion of followers for this up and coming winery.

Only made in small volumes, this great Barolo hails from the legendary Bussia vineyard, one of Barolo's greatest, situated in the Monforte d'Alba district.

Traditional in style, the wine is full-bodied with fine, ripe tannins and generous red berry, cherry, coffee and sweet spice notes.

It’s a terrific Barolo from a terrific vintage that easily competes with wines at 2 or 3 times the price.

With only a few cases that we managed to source directly from Italy, this is an offer not to be missed!

About the wine

This is a very fine, gloriously traditional Barolo with an explosive floral, rich, tobacco and spice-led nose that leads to a neatly-structured palate that has fine-grained tannins and gorgeous red berry, cherry, coffee and sweet spices. This is an expressive Barolo that although very drinkable already will continue to develop in bottle, so don’t be wary of keeping a bottle or two aside, if you can resist it!

The grapes for the Bussia Barolo come from a fairly young vineyard with vines from 5 to 15 years old. Ghisolfi uses natural yeasts in fermentation before 30 months of aging takes  place in oak barrels, followed by 6 months in the bottle. Only then is the wine released for sale.

About the winery

With a modest seven hectares planted to vine, Attilio Ghisolfi is a boutique producer with a comparatively small presence in the international wine market. There’s more than a touch of truth that the locals are, in this case, keeping the best stuff for themselves!

The property has been run by third generation, Gianmarco Ghisolfi since 1988, who started making the estate’s own wine, rather than selling grapes to other producers.

Small, quality-focused and highly praised by those who know them, the Ghisolfi wines are truly excellent.

About the vineyard

Located in Bussia, one of the finest crus in the Barolo wine-growing area, the seven hectares of Ghisolfi vineyards can be seen from the road that winds its way up from Castiglione Falletto to Monforte d’Alba.

Facing south and south-west, at an altitude of 300 to 350 meters above sea level, the vines are between five and 15 years old. The soils are marl and white tufa.

95 points 'Cellar Selection - Wine Enthusiast
Dark-skinned berry, menthol, new leather, blue flower and baking spice aromas take center stage. On the radiant, full-bodied palate, vibrant acidity lifts red cherry, raspberry compote, star anise, clove and tobacco while youthfully taut, fine-grained tannins provide firm support."

93 points - James Suckling
"A polished and refined red with plum, light coffee and sandalwood character. Medium to full body, round tannic mouthfeel and a fresh finish."

92 points - Wine Spectator
"A fresh, fruity style, this offers cherry, strawberry and tobacco notes, backed by a vibrant structure. Balanced and long, ending with a coating of dusty tannins."

17/20 points - Walter Speller
"Lustrous and just mid ruby. Pretty, deep nose of cherry and a hint of dried fruit. Coating tannins and almost rich fruit, yet perfectly contained by the acidity. Classic."

"This 2013 is as good as I have tried from Ghisolfi. Packed with bright primary fruit now it will age beautifully. Plenty of fine firm tannin now that will mellow over the next ten years. Gets 5 stars in value for money alone.5/5 Stars

"...a profusion of rose petals, crimson cherry and tar, accented by earl-grey tea, old medicine and tobacco. Despite it's youth this still showed savory mushrooms and leather, dried cranberry and heavy dust. This is getting 4.5 stars for it's potential, while it is outstanding now, in 10 years it will be singing."  4.5/5 Stars

"Now THIS is a Barolo. Black cherries, plums, spice. It's full-bodied and manages to satisfy the palate completely. Worth every penny!4.5/5 stars

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
