On offer today for just £33.75 is this enormously attractive Brunello from Tuscan great, Banfi.

Banfi may have only been around since 1978, but the drive, passion and energy of its founders have catapulted it into the forefront of Tuscan wineries and gained it worldwide recognition.

Constantly working to produce the best wines possible from their beautiful estates, this excellent Brunello from the superb 2013 vintage clearly demonstrates how that work has paid off.

When writing about the 2013 vintage in Brunello, Kerin O’Keefe said, “If you want to experience the energy, elegance and age-worthy structure that first drew wine lovers and collectors to Brunello di Montalcino decades ago, then 2013 is your vintage.”

The Banfi Brunello di Montalcino 2013 reflects the intensity and energy of the vintage.

Autumnal fruits and cherries dominate the nose with undertones of vanilla, nutmeg and spice. Full-bodied with great intensity, the wine has a stunningly silky palate.

Luxurious and delicious, this is a Brunello great!

About the wine

Plum, blackberry and cherry dominate the nose with undertones of vanilla, nutmeg and spice. Full and velvety with intense flavours of liquorice and cherry on the palate. This is deliciously ripe Brunello featuring a lovely, silky smooth texture and a long, luxurious finish. Crafted in a more modern style, it is exceptionally well done. Absolutely delicious now, the quality of this wine means it is likely to age well for at least a decade.

A meticulous grape selection is followed by vinification in temperature-controlled stainless steel & wood tanks, with skin contact for 10-12 days. The wine ages for 2 years in variously sized oak barrels (Slavonian and French), 350-liter barriques, and 60- and 120 hl barrels. Finally the wine is aged in bottle for an additional 8-12 months before release - a combination of Montalcino tradition with winemaking modernity.

Banfi have a very significant vineyard holding in Brunello and they have invested substantially in much to do with grape growing and winemaking in the area. They have led the way in sangiovese clone research and are also known for their “horizon project” – a winery within the winery that looks at the impact of a range of winemaking techniques.

About the winery

Castello Banfi was founded in 1978 by the Mariani family, Italian-Americans who had been involved in wine importing and distribution since 1919. They saw great potential in this then sleepy Tuscan region and from the start their goal was to establish a point of excellence in Montalcino.

Combining a respect for tradition and the environment with state of the art research and working practices they have helped to transform the region’s wines and established Banfi’s reputation in an impressively short period of time.

They produce premium wines in Montalcino and beyond with a profound respect for the land and people.

The Castello Banfi estate is the largest contiguous vineyard in Europe and includes land in Tuscany and Piedmont.

About the vineyard

Positioned at the confluence of the Orcia and Ombrone rivers, the Banfi estate extends along the southern slopes of the town of Montalcino, across almost 3000 hectares of land, one third of which is planted to vine.

The soils are rich and uniform, structured with clay and calcium which support healthy vine growth and grapes with great balance and complexity.

95 points - James Suckling
Ripe cherry and walnut with fresh herb undertones and spice. Full body, extremely fine tannins and a silky, textured finish. Very classic and balanced. Beautifully crafted."

92+ points - Monica Larner
"Castello Banfi's 2013 Brunello di Montalcino denotes riper and softer fruit than most of its peers in this vintage. This historic estate is located in the southern quadrant of the appellation, where temperatures are a few degrees warmer on average. You don't always taste that difference in ripeness, but for some reason, it comes forward with increased intensity in 2013. Therefore, I am officially recommending this wine to all those Brunello lovers who appreciate a little more volume and softness on those proverbial love handles. If you like 'em lean and mean, go elsewhere. But if you happen to be seated in front of a piping hot beefsteak that was just pulled off the grill, then you should definitely reach for this bottle."

"Beautiful Brunello, and for a Brunello good value for money too! Medium intense aromas of cherry, blackberry, milk chocolate, leather. Full bodied palate with velvety medium tannins, med+ acidity, and flavours of young cherry, brambles, milk chocolate, rhubarb, thyme, black pepper. Long finish."  4/5 Stars

"Brunello means dark and this wine is a deep dark crimson. Violets, vanilla and licorice and black olives in both nose and taste. This wine is in its youth and needs some time in the cellar. But, it is already showing velvety tannins and lots of baking spices with loads of red fruit"  4/5 Stars

"Fantastic wine, well structured and easy to drink."  4/5 Stars

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
