Sourced from ancient vineyards in Barossa's finest sub-region, we are pleased to offer the Bishop Shiraz from world-famous winemaker Ben Glaetzer!

Rich, ripe, full-bodied and made from some of Australia's best grapes, the Bishop offers superb complexity and concentration - but not at the expense of elegance.

With 95 points and 4 Stars from more than 400 Vivino reviews, a generous 20% discount makes this a great price for a great wine!

“Glaetzer is one of the emerging stars of the Barossa." Langton's Classification (a ‘form guide’ of Australia’s best performing and most prized wines)

About the wine

Almost opaque in the glass, the Bishop reveals atrractive, complex notes of blackberry, currants, mulberry and dark chocolate mingling with scents of violets and clove-like spice. On the palate, this is a big, beautiful Barossa Shiraz and proud to be so. The palate has a rich, soft density, with pure, dark fruit and some plum notes. Firm, savoury tannins give the wine an elegant structure and it finishes with great intensity and length. With such depth and harmony, this must be one of the Barossa's best Shiraz wines at this price. Already approachable and difficult to resist now, it will also age nicely.

Bishop is the family name of Colin's wife' Judith. Fittingly the sign of Venus, a symbol which has come to represent women and feminine energy, is the centrepiece of the Bishop label. In mythology, the symbol meant the Roman goddess Venus or her Greek equivalent Aphrodite. But the sign has also been linked back to ancient Egypt – a nod to Bishop’s link to Amon-Ra and Anaperenna, Glaetzer's flagship wines.

The Bishop is made using extended maceration to enable good tannin development so the wine is soft and approachable early. Due to perfect fruit & vintage conditions in 2015, a portion of new French oak was used for maturation.

About the winery

The first Glaetzers settled in the Barossa Valley in 1888 after emigrating from Brandenburg, Germany. The family left Germany on board the Nord-Deutscher Lloyd steamer “Habsburg” and took seven weeks to reach their final destination of Port Adelaide. From here they settled in a country town called Nuriootpa in the Barossa Valley where they started their new life in Australia. The family were some of the earliest recorded viticulturalists in the Barossa Valley and Clare Valley.

Over a century later, winemaking patriarch Colin Glaetzer established Glaetzer Wines, a boutique family-owned winery producing premium Barossa Valley wines. Today Colin’s son Ben carries on the wine-making traditions at Glaetzer Wines. Indeed it was the birth of Glaetzer Wines that signalled a new era for Colin’s family which boasts more than its fair share of winemakers

About the vineyard

All fruit for Glaetzer Wines is taken from the small sub-region of the northern Barossa Valley, called Ebenezer.

The ancient (35-120 year old vines), dry-grown vineyards in the renowned Ebenezer district are an important part of Australia’s winemaking heritage and a living link to traditional Barossa viticulture. Exceptional fruit from a loyal group of third and fourth generation Barossa grape growers is the backbone of Glaetzer wines

About the winemaker

Ben Glaetzer graduated in winemaking from Adelaide University, after working at Barossa Valley Estate during school and university holidays. Having worked in the Hunter Valley and travelling extensively throughout many of the worlds wine regions, Ben returned to the Barossa and joined the family company.

Ben’s ability to blend traditional winemaking techniques with a modern flair is reflected in the style of all wines under the Glaetzer label.

95 Points - James Halliday
"
In classic Glaetzer style, full-bodied and taking no prisoners. Black fruits, licorice, dark chocolate, ripe tannins and oak are woven together so tightly it’s hard to tell where one starts and/or another finishes. It’s not my style, but it’s hard to deny the quality. "

93 Points - Huon Hooke
"
Rich, ripe, red. The colour is deep, dark red/purple and the bouquet is rich, ripe and quite oak-tinged, while the mouthfeel is soft and full-bodied with attractive flavour and balance. It’s a delicious shiraz of balance, elegance and persistence."

"
Youthful purple. Powerful smoke- and spice-accented cassis, cherry liqueur and cola aromas are sharpened by a zesty mineral element. Deep-pitched black and blue fruit flavors show a surprisingly graceful character, picking up vanilla and floral pastille accents with air. Supple and seamless on the clinging, subtly tannic finish, which leaves a sweet dark berry note behind."

91 Points - Wine Enthusiast
"This wine starts shy but after some time in glass reveals bramble berries, cooked meat and wild herbs. More bramble fruit bursts onto the palate morphing into big, drying tannins that are balanced by a good lick of acidity and a long, herbal and cherry-cola finish."

"Aromatic fresh ripen red fruit, dark fruit, sweet warm sweeten berry, oak spicy and sweet spicy. Dry, full body, with medium plus tannin and acidity. Extremely fruity red fruit, dark plum, warm Greek spicy and farmyard in palate. Good balance, long finish. Fresh and young" 4.5/5 Stars

"Wonderful. Light tannins, deep berries, Velvet mouth feel, nutmeg finish that is unique and pleasant. Really surprised at how much I enjoyed this." 4.5/5 Stars

"Super yummy. Complex! Ripe dark fruits with pepper, vanilla, nutmeg, chocolate, dried fruits and tobacco. Big mouthfeel with a great long finish." 4.5/5 Stars

"Big, bold and beautiful! A marquee Shiraz from Barossa Valley, labelled with the Venus symbol. Lots of taste on the nose, with oak, blackberry and dark chocolate. Beautiful dark color. Recommended for sure!"  4.5/5 Stars

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
