We are very excited to be offering this limited-production Syrah to you today for £33.45 – 12% off the UK RRP.

Thalarn combines northern Rhône elegance with Spanish flair!

Grapes are sourced from a high-altitude site that is cool and blessed with rocky, clay limestone soils on which syrah thrives. Away from the heat of the plains, the fruit is able to ripen slowly, gaining complexity and richness over time.

Winemaker, Raül Bobet was excited to find stone lagares, carved out of the hillsides by monks in the 12th century at the property and now carefully restored and extensively tested, the wine is partially fermented in them. French oak barrels are used for malolactic fermentation and ageing and this gives the wine roundness and extra breadth.

Thalarn has scored no less than 93 points in the last five vintages, which is an impressive innings indeed!

You may not associate Spain with top-end syrah but this is a breathtakingly good wine and we think this is an opportunity not to miss...

About the wine

Extremely stylish and elegant, this wine shouts its cool-climate origins with a strong mineral, earthy quality on the nose, alongside black hedgerow fruit, spice and herbal touchese. The palate is bright and engaging with fine-grained tannins, a refreshing touch of acidity and a lovely, long finish that has marked granite, floral and liquorice notes. Wonderfully pure and balanced, this is a syrah to take on and beat the best of the Northern Rhone - not something we say lightly!

Thalarn is a cuvée made from high-altitude syrah vines whose roots are in rocky, clay limestone. The wine was partially fermented in the estate’s unique, 12th century stone lagares, as well as in stainless steel and oak vats. The malolactic fermentation was entirely in oak before being aged in French oak for 18 months.

About the winery

A hugely exciting project, Castell d’Encús is led by winemaker Raul Bobet who wanted to make wine away from the increasingly hot and climate change-influenced vineyards of Catalunya.

What he found, when he headed into the Catalan Pyrenees, ended up not just being a story about climate but one of ancient winemaking as he came across stone fermenting lagares that had been carved into the rocks by the monks of the Hospitaller Order. These have been restored and tested and are once again in use.

Bobet fell in love and the property was purchased in 2001.

About the vineyard

Located at 3,900 feet above sea level, winemaker Raul Bobet was very much focused on finding a cool-climate site when he was looking for a place to make wine.

Surrounded by mountains and woodland, the vineyards are at risk from snow, frost and hungry birds so there’s much to be done to protect and nurture the vines. It’s all done as sustainably as possible with only organic-approved treatments used. The soils are typically clay limestone. Harvesting is done by hand.

95 points - Luis Gutiérrez
I tasted two vintages of the pure Syrah named after the village where the estate is located, the oldest of which is the 2015 Thalarn. It had been in bottle since June 2017 after 12 months in new barrique and seven months in foudre. The wine had floral and spicy characteristics with hints of licorice, fennel and some other Mediterranean herbs. The palate felt balanced, with very fine tannins, polished and with very integrated oak."

94 points - Jeb Dunnuck (2014 vintage)
"Another wine from Castell d’Encus that has a cool-climate vibrancy, the 2014 Thalarn is 100% Syrah, from high elevation, granite soils, that saw 18 months in 60% new French oak. Reminding me a of a top Saint Joseph with its blackberry and plums fruits, olive tapenade, floral, and graphite-tinged aromas and flavors, this beauty hits the palate with medium-bodied richness, good acidity, and a fresh, classy style. Count me impressed."

"Beautiful high altitude, Catalan Syrah. Blackberry, chocolate, meat, violets, and grass notes. Perfumed, delicate, and fresh Syrah. Not huge but subtle and delicious"  4.5/5 Stars

"Wild and crazy take on Syrah from the Catalan Pyrenes in Northern Spain. Think Chateauneuf du pape with a dash of wild yeast. Nose is berry, pepper, vanilla and almost blue cheese?!?! Smokey, Bacon, salty moment on the palate and incredible long sour cherry and herb finish. Wild ride on the tongue!"  4/5 Stars

"Second wine today with RP95, but this is much better. Clear cherry color, M+body. Aromas with blackberries, cherry, liquorice, minerals and floral notes. Long finish with integrated tannins, low acidity. Very elegant and balanced , but with even premium performance predicted with ageing"  4.5/5 Stars

Other Offers

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
