Fonterutoli are not only one of the most historical Chianti estates (owned since 1534 by the Mazzei family!) but one of the best as well. And there is no better illustration of their quality than their Gran Selezione Chianti!

Gran Selezione is the highest quality level of Chianti, and the one from Fonterutoli is made from 50 separate single vineyards that are blended together to create an unique and incredible wine.

With some of the highest ever scores for a Chianti Gran Selezione from both the Wine Spectator and Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (not to mention 95 points, a Platinum medal and 'Best Chianti' from the Decanter Wine Awards), the 2013 vintage of this lovely Tuscan red has been a roaring success.

And yet, despite the critical acclaim and the sheer level of effort that goes into creating the wine, it remains significantly undervalued by the region's standards at just £39.45 per bottle (wines in Tuscany with scores like this normally fetch hundreds of pounds).

Take advantage of the price whilst it still remains low and pick up some of the few bottles we have managed to find. Be quick though - this is a wine that won't be around for long!

About the wine

Gran Selezione is the highest quality level within the historic Chianti Classico region and this is one of the best wines within that category! A lovely bright red in colour, on the nose the wine is very complex and lovely red fruit, cherry and blackberry, mixes with floral notes, leather and a black pepper spice. The palate presents a remarkable combination of intensity and elegance, with deep, ripe fruit alongside a muscular structure and fine tannins that are balanced with a very pleasant acidity that makes it a perfect food wine. Vibrant, powerful and energetic, this is a top notch Chianti Classico that is delicious drinking right now but has a long, happy life ahead of it.

This Chianti is created from about 50 single vineyard plots across the Fonterutoli estate. The grapes were hand picked from the 1st October in the following areas - Fonterutoli and Badiola, the higher areas, with grapes giving aromas and elegance and the lower areas, Siepi and Belvedere, with grapes that provide structure, intensity and longevity).

The various plots were vinified seperately with the grapes being fermented and and macerated for 15-18 days and then aged for 20 months in small French oak barrels. After this, the final blend was made and then bottled in February 2013.

About the winery

Located 5 km south of Castellina in Chianti in the heart of the Chianti Classico, Castello di Fonterutoli has been owned by the Mazzei family since 1534. It still retains its original form, that of a tranquil country village: a cluster of houses, the church of San Miniato and the villa, built at the end of the 1500s where the medieval castle once stood.

The history of the Mazzei family is closely linked not just to the history of winemaking in Tuscany, but to the political and cultural history of the entire region. The first documents that name the Mazzei family – originally from the winemaking area of Carmignano – date back to the early eleventh century.

Today, after almost six centuries, the family, under the guidance of Lapo, who oversees the property with the help of his sons, Filippo and Francesco, and Filippo’s son, Giovanni, still devotes itself to winemaking, with an ongoing commitment to innovation and improvement while respecting tradition, family values and the natural environment.

About the vineyard

Today, the estate boasts a total surface area of 650 hectares, of which 117 are devoted to specialized vineyards, divided between five areas: Fonterutoli, Siepi, Badiola, Belvedere and Caggio.

The vineyards are largely planted with Sangiovese (36 carefully selected clones that are best suited to the four areas of production: Fonterutoli and Badiola, the higher areas, with clones giving aromas and elegance and the lower areas, Siepi and Belvedere, with clones that provide structure, intensity and longevity).

The soils are ‘Galestro’, a classic Tuscan shale, which has excellent drainage and encourages the vines to put down deep roots and ‘Alberese’, a compact, fine grained limestone marl. Yields are lower than 40 hectolitres per hectare from vineyards planted with over 7,000 vines per hectare, guaranteeing a high quality and a distinctive character, resulting in complex, elegant and structured wines.

"
An essence of sweet cherry grounds the surrounding flavors of leather, iron, spice and tobacco in this firm red, which remains vibrant and refined. Bracing acidity and dense, muscular tannins play out on the long finish."

"
The 2013 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello Fonterutoli is an exceptionally balanced and smooth red wine that is the result of a complicated fruit-blending process. Some 36 biotypes of Sangiovese are used in the mix and are harvested from 120 single vineyard parcels with primarily Alberese and Galestro limestone soils. It is made from 92% Sangiovese, and 8% Malvasia Nera and Colorino. The bouquet offers bold cherry and plum with spice and soft tobacco."

"Excellent Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, a dark, deep red-ruby color with brick-brown shade. Nose: juicy fruity, ripe blackberries and plums, vanilla, bright tobacco and subtle oak barrel, with red flowers aroma.
In the mouth: black fruit, plum jam, prunes, pepper, mocha, coffee, mineral notes of tobacco, some young wooden notes. Wine still young but very good, aromatic, dense, silky, fairly complex, with great structure.
Balanced, but also distinct tannins and intense fruit acidity.
Elegant, long finish."  4.5/5 Stars

"Splendidly savoury, full and bold!" 4/5 Stars

"Superb wine. Herbs, spices and leather hints with tobacco and dark cherries with blackberries. Who could want for anything more?"  4.5/5 Stars

"Amazing, nose of warm strawberries, caramel, baked red cherry, fresh damp tobacco. Palate extremely smooth tannins and well balanced fruit and acidity. Pretty much a perfect wine!"  4.5/5 Stars

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
