"Potentially the most exciting wine project in the Southern hemisphere" Tim Atkin

Fed up with people constantly calling Chilean wine "boring, industrial, green, overripe, etc", 4 winemaking friends got together to prove the world wrong.

And they have done it with style!

Ignoring the traditional wine-making areas, they have sought out extreme terroir across Chile to make wines that can compete with the world's best. The result is Clos des Fous and their wines have gathered a cult following for their tiny quantities, brilliant flavours and faithful representation of the land the grapes were grown on.

The vineyard responsible for this wonderful Pinot Noir was one of the first in Chile to be planted with clonal material from Burgundy (including clones from Vosne-Romanée and Gevréy Chambertin). Situated near the sea in Aconcagua Costa, it has produced a bright, vibrant, savoury Pinot that is certainly one of Chile's best and can hold its head high on the world stage.

There is definitely something Burgundian about the wine, but little wonder considering one of the friends spent 4 years working with the likes of Lucien Le Moine and Liger-Belair. But that said, it has its own Chilean character and a delicious one it is too.

With just 450 cases made, there isn't much to go around and we can only offer a few. Don't miss out on one of Chile's best!

About the wine

The nose is highly aromatic with notes of cherry, raspberry and chamomile coupled with an earthy granite character. The flavours on the palate flow from the aromas with consistent vibrant red fruit and a refreshing acidity. The light body belies the complexity of this wine and layers of that lovely fresh red fruit mingle with spice and savoury notes before a very long finish that is both smooth and mineral. Clearly made with skill and care, this is absolute evidence that Chile can produce world-class wines when the terroir and the winemakers are right.

Grapes were hand harvested and transported to the winery. The wine was fermented slowly in large cement vats and was then aged for 18 months in new French oak. The wood for the barrels was sourced from the Vosges in Alsace and the barrels prepared at the winery.

About the winery

Clos des Fous is an exciting project between four Chilean friends: Pedro Parra (the viticulturalist), François Massoc and Paco Leyton (the winemakers), and Albert Cussen, who looks after the business.

'Fous' is the French word for 'crazy men', a reference to what their peers described as their 'craziness' in crossing the traditional vineyard boundaries of Chile to source grapes from vineyards in the extreme conditions further south and east. Pedro is credited with discovering many of the top vineyard sites across Chile, as well as revolutionising the way in which iconic wineries, such as Montes plant and manage their vineyards.

The winery is based in Maule, to the south of the main vineyard area, where the 'Fous' make an enviable range of top quality varietal wines.

About the vineyard

Arenaria comes from vineyards in Pucalán, located eight kilometers from the sea in Aconcagua Costa.

Vines are planted on ancient palezoic soils made up of deposits of marine creatures that have become rock arenaria. The soil has low fertility with a clay surface. The Pucalán vineyard consists of four hectares planted with a density of 10,000 plants per hectare.

Pucalán is one of the first 100% Chilean vineyards planted with clonal material from Burgundy (including clones from Vosne-Romanée and Gevréy Chambertin).

"
Lovely sweet fruit and bright tea and lemon rind follow through to a medium body, fine tannins and a clean finish. Really pretty, balanced red."

94 Points - Luis Gutierrez
"
This is sourced from a vineyard in the Aconcagua Costa appellation some eight kilometers away from the sea. It was planted with 10,000 plants per hectare of Burgundy clones on limestone soils that turned into sandstone that yields 800 grams of grapes per plant. It fermented in concrete vats and matured in new French oak barrels for 18 months, including malolactic. It has a musky nose with some sour cherries and a hint of earth, a very nice interpretation of Pinot Noir. The palate is seamless, with very fine tannins and delicate flavors that linger on your tongue. The texture is velvety and the tannins ultra-fine. Simply superb."

Sophisticated, ferrous and iodine and earth as well as ripe red fruit. Staunchly savoury, very bright acid, loads of clove spice on the finish."

"Brilliant value. Rich and succulent Pinot5/5 stars

"Clear crimson. Currants, cherry, tobacco, leather, and spice in the aroma. Medium body cherry, leather, red currants, laurels, and smoke."  4/5 Stars

"What a wine this is! Eucalyptus, spices, flowers, cherries and cranberries leading into a layer of forest floor and soup stock aroma. Smooth but bone dry; cherry pits, raspberries, oak, spicebox and a tinge of herbal notes. Medium-bodied. This finds itself as a true Pinot with a distinct Chilean terroir; it has great complexity...Worth seeking out. "  4/5 Stars

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
