“...best known for its extraordinary Châteauneuf-du-Papes, which have been spectacular since the mid 1990s" Robert Parker

One of Parker's 'World’s Greatest Wine Estates’, Domaine de la Mordorée are considered to be amongst the first rank of Châteauneuf-du-Pape makers.

Until his untimely death in 2015, the estate was driven by Christophe Delorme, considered to be one of the very best winemakers in the Rhône. Under his guidance, Mordorée became one of the region's most dynamic estates.

La Reine des Bois is their top wine and previous vintages have received 99 and even the magical 100 points from Parker, testament to the fact that these are some of the best wines being made in Châteauneuf and even some of the best wines in the world.

This kind of quality and winemaking skill, would, were it to herald from Bordeaux or Burgundy, carry a price tag of hundred of pounds. Which makes the actual price of just £42.25 all the more surprising!

Superb wine, a generous price and 6 years of age - what more could you ask for??

About the wine

Known for its power and richness, the Reine des Bois fills the glass with aromas of black fruit, violets, truffle and a smoky spice, all of which carry through to the silken, rich palate. Full-bodied and concentrated, layers of deep, ripe black fruit mingle with fine tannins and a freshness that ensures balance. Still remaining elegant, despite the wine's opulence, the spice and sweet fruit linger onto the long finish. A wine that is definitely delicious drinking now but one that will easily cellar for the next decade and quite possibly longer.

Made from vines with an average age of 60+ years (some are over 100 years old), the grapes hand-harvested and then are destemmed before undergoing a long maceration and a 30-day fermentation with temperature control. Fermentation takes place 30% in previously-used casks, 70% in stainless vats.

About the winery

Ideally situated at the crossroads of Provence and Languedoc, the Domaine de la Mordorée produces some of the greatest wines of the Rhône valley from Lirac, Tavel, Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Condrieu.

Known as one of the leading and most dynamic wine estates in the Southern Rhône Valley, Mordorée was run by the famed Christophe Delorme until his untimely death in 2015. Delorme founded Domaine de la Mordorée in 1986 along with his father, Francis and later his brother, Fabrice and expanded the estate from its orginal 12 acres to the 55 hectares that are grown today.

Christophe was known for his commitment to quality which manifested itself in an insistence on hand-harvesting (in regions such as Tavel where it was very unusual), and a solid belief in organic winegrowing and low yields. His approach paid off in spades. Robert Parker named Mordoree as one of his "World's Greatest Wine Estates' in the book of the same name and Mordoree's wines sell out year after year, despite hailing from some of the Rhône's less fashionable areas.

Since Christophe's death, the winemaking has been in the hands of the estimable Rémy Chauvet, who was cellarmaster for many years.

About the vineyard

The Domaine de la Mordorée’s vineyards in Châteauneuf-du-Pape are located mainly in the Plateau de La Crau, dating back to the Villafranchian (1.9 to 1.8 million years old), is made up of rolled pebbles brought by the Rhone river. At a depth of 7 to 8 metres underneath is to be found a layer of blue clay, which acts as a reserve of water over the summer. This terroir is particularly suitable to winegrowing, and gives great wines featuring depth and complexity.

The top plateau of the Cabrières district is a mix of pebbles deposited by the Rhone during the Villafranchian, and of calcareous broken stone, which is debris from the Urgonian limestone bar (127 to 125 million years old) just west of this area.

"
One of the blockbusters in the vintage, the inky-colored 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape La Reine des Bois – 80% Grenache, completely destemmed and aged 12 months in 80% stainless steel and 20% old barrels – offers fantastic richness and depth in its blackberry liqueur, graphite, wood smoke and crushed-rock-like aromas and flavors. An elegant, stylish and polished example of this cuvée, it comes closest in my mind to a lighter-weight 2010. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and with fine tannin."

"
Inky ruby. High-pitched red and dark berry scents are complemented by suggestions of candied flowers and smoky Indian spices. Silky, sweet and palate-staining, offering intense black raspberry and blueberry flavors and an exotic twist of blood orange. Manages to be both powerful and lithe, finishing with harmonious tannins and outstanding clarity and length."

"Deep in color, with just a hint of oak along with the flowery, spicy, jammy, smoky, black raspberry filled perfume. Sweet, sexy, lush and plush, the fruit is ripe sensuos and fresh. This will probably rise in score as the wine ages and integrates."

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
