Chenin Blanc is the star-performing white grape in South Africa and so we’re very pleased to have a stunning old vine example on offer today.

Made using fruit from two vineyards in the famed Swartland region, both planted with old bush vines that have never been irrigated. The result is vines that produce tiny amounts of very intense, concentrated fruit.

Little wonder that the Elodie Chenin Blanc is turning heads and getting the critics salivating!

Rich, honeyed, floral and aged in large oak barrels to add texture and creaminess, we think this is absolutely delicious and a prime example of exactly why South African Chenin Blanc is so highly regarded.

Gabriëlskloof are only a young estate but with South African legend Peter-Allan Finlayson in charge of winemaking, they are going places fast.

Still somewhat 'under the radar', now's the time to get involved with Gabriëlskloof before the rest of the world catches on!

About the wine

The Elodie Chenin Blanc is deeply attractive; bright in the glass with a pale golden straw hue, on the nose you are greeted with subtle aromas of honeycomb and dried pineapple with secondary notes of almond, apricot and white flowers. The palate is full-bodied, with an fabulous silky texture from the oak ageing and the great natural freshness typical of old vine Chenin.

An utterly lovely wine - this is easily the equal of the best Chenin Blanc being made world-wide.

Having been purchased in 2001 and the first vintage only released in 2009, Gabriëlskloof is a young winery but with winemaking legend Peter-Allan Finlayson now in charge of winemaking, it’s an estate on the up and up!

To make the Elodie Chenin Blanc, the grapes were whole bunch pressed and, after an overnight settling in tank, the juice was transferred to 400 and 500 litre old French oak barrels, where it was fermented wild and then aged before bottling.

About the winery

Gabriëlskloof is a beautiful wine estate located near Bot River in the Overberg region east of Cape Town.

It was purchased in 2001 by Bernhard Heyns, who had been on the lookout for the ideal place to plant vines. After planting, his first vintage was in 2009. From 2015, Bernhard’s son-in-law, Peter-Allan Finlayson, took over as winemaker.

The farm has 300 hectares, with 68 hectares planted to vines. The climate is cool with maritime influences coming from Walker Bay. The vineyards are farmed sustainably with the aim to move to organic farming in the future.

About the vineyard

The two vineyards used to make this wine are situated in the Paardeberg region of the Swartland. Both are estimated to be over 35 years old.

They are dryland bush vine vineyards and have never been irrigated. These vineyards are very labour intensive to farm and, as a result of the arid conditions, yield little fruit (between one and three tonnes per hecatre).

South Africa is the only New World country that has significant plantings of old-vine Chenin Blanc and Elodie is an expression of what can be made from this national treasure.

95 points - Tim Atkin
One of a handful of brilliant new releases from Gabriëlskloof, now under the winemaking control of Peter-Allan Finlayson, this comes from Piketberg and the Swartland. Sappy, concentrated and rich, with honey and wild flower aromas, some nutmeg spice and a long, refreshing finish"

17/20 points - Jancis Robinson (2015 vintage)
"38-year-old vines. Round and honeysuckle fruit with great focus and precision."

"An excellent Chenin from Gabrielskloof. On the nose lemon peel and nutty aromas. On tasting, layers of flavours from Granny Smith apples to lemon and smoked almonds. Lovely long length and a buttery mouth feel. So complex and opened up even more when the wine warmed up slightly." 4.5/5 Stars

"LOVE IT,  minerals, very buttery and creamy. Vanilla ( could be confused for Chardonnay if it wasn't so pale in colour). Great value wine" 5.0/5 Stars

"Full of caramel, vanilla, cedar, tropical fruit, and butterscotch. Bigger bodied white wine with intensity and length" 4.0/5 Stars

"Wonderful Chenin Blanc. Full yet dry, rich without being overpowering, fruit laden but with great acidity and a lovely herbal note coming through towards the end. Cracking stuff."  5/5 stars (2015 vintage)

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
