Son of renowned winemaker, Jorge, Matías Riccitelli has begun to make his own reputation in Argentina - and some reputation it is!

In 2016, Wine Enthusiast singled him out as one of the ‘now generation’ of winemakers in Argentina who are setting the course for the country’s future - and in the same year, Tim Atkin named him as Argentina’s ‘Young Winemaker of the Year’, also naming the winery as a 'Second Growth' in his classification of Argentina.

Truly a winemaker of prodigious talent and a man to watch!

His aim is simple - source the best grapes from the finest terroirs and showcase the best of these unique and individual sites. His Vineyard Selection Malbec clearly demonstrates this philosophy. With fruit sourced from three distinctive vineyards at the foot of the Andes with vines aged from 20-80 years old; each vineyard contributes something different - from floral notes, to concentration and freshness.

This is truly magnificent malbec, amongst the best being made in Argentina and on offer for £25.75 - a pretty great price considering the sheer quality in the bottle.

About the wine

Concentrated and powerful, this is a very complex and elegant wine with aromas of wild blackberries, black cherries, plums, liquorice and floral notes. Big and full-bodied, it is brimming with ripe fruit, but is nonetheless extremely well balanced with a great structure, a rounded palate and a savoury minerality on the long, lingering finish. Suprisingly elegant, this is just great to drink now but it will have a good 5-7 years ahead of it and perhaps even longer.

The grapes are hand-picked at optimum maturity levels from three vineyards. The average yield is 35 hectolitres per hectare, with a January ‘green harvest’, helping to manage the yields as well as helping to concentrate the flavours in the remaining berries.

The fruit was vinified in small concrete vats, with indigenous yeasts. A five-day cold maceration was followed by a 15 day maceration at 28ºC. The wine was then transferred into French oak barrels - a combination of first, second and third use - for 16 months.

About the winery

The son of renowned winemaker, Jorge Riccitelli, Matías set up his ‘winemaking shop’ in the heart of Vistalba, in Mendoza’s Lujan de Cuyo in 2009. Driven by a passion to show the full potential of Argentina’s unique terroirs, the wines are the product of rich, native soils and the latest winemaking know-how and technology.

About the vineyard

This top-notch Malbec is produced from three old vine vineyards, each with their own unique character. The first two are found in Lujan de Cuyo and the third in La Consulta.

The Vistalba vineyards are 1050 meters above sea level, planted 60 years ago and here the soils are loamy, clay-like and calcareous with good drainage. “The terroir of Vistalba is very important for the production of high-end Malbec. The terroir combined the benefits of high altitude vineyards with excellent soils, vineyards with longevity, with low yields obtained naturally…” says Matías.

Perdriel meanwhile is about 100 meters lower down and even older, having been planted 80 years ago. It has a continental climate with cold winters and mild summers, the fruit giving malbec wines with “great intensity, notable red and black fruit aromas and minerality with a very gentle structure.”

Last but not least is La Consulta, the highest vineyard at 1128 meters above sea level, and also the youngest at 20 years old. It is described by Matías as having “dry soils with very little organic material… unique terroir that allows us to produce wines with great polyphenolic concentration, floral aromas with excellent balance.”

About the winemaker

Matias Riccitelli, owner and winemaker of this project, was born in Cafayete, Salta. He identifies as a traveler and a tireless dreamer. Over the past decade, Matias has developed into the chief winemaker of one of the most prestigious boutique wineries in Argentina.

After countless harvests throughout the world, he has decided to combine everything he has learned and dedicate himself to exploring the excellent terroirs of Mendoza and the teachings of his mentor, and father, Jorge Riccitelli (the first Latin American to be elected as “Winemaker of the Year” by the presitigious American magazine “Wine Enthusiast).

Following this idea, in 2009 Matias decided to create “Riccitelli Wines” his very own line of wines, using grapes from the most prestigious and antique regions of Mendoza.

"
Lots of stone and dark-walnut aromas here. Blackberries. Full body; this is very much a malbec in character. All old vines. Bark character and black tea."

93 Points - Tim Atkin
"A blend of old vine Malbecs...this sees more oak than most of Matías Riccitelli’s wines, but has the structure, plush tannins and fruit concentration to cope. Savoury, dense and beautifully balanced, it’s smoky, plummy and brimming with fruit."

"From Vistalba vineyards, along with Perdriel and El Cepillo. The new face of Malbec: floral at first, then savoury, mineral and elegant, with dark blue fruit.

92 Points - Wine Enthusiast
"...This well-built Malbec has lift and intensity on the palate. Dark, toasty black-fruit flavors are delicious but typical for this type of full-bodied Mendoza Malbec. Pastry notes, oak grain and char are the most distinct characteristics on a full-force finish."

"This is what Malbec is all about. Big, bold and in your face. Blueberry to the fore, plum and blackberry lurking in the background. Some herbal notes leading to a smokey mocha finish. Smooth with balanced tannins. Where do I get more?"  4.5/5 Stars

"Great notes of cherry, blueberry, vanilla and sweet tobacco. The tiniest hint of dark chocolate on the nose too. Huge slam of fruit up front on this one - black fruit (cherry and blueberry mostly) and chocolate. The finish is mildly spicy and dead smooth. Very good."  4/5 Stars

"Cannot tell you how delicious this wine is! Fantastic big fruity flavours - I was a little hesitant as it's more than I normally spend on a bottle but loved other wines from this vineyard and it is worth the price." 5/5 Stars

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
