"The 2013 Avvoltore is one of the best recent editions of this wine I can remember tasting" Antonio Galloni

The flagship wine of the famed Morisfarms estate, Avvoltore is consistently one of the best Super-Tuscan wines.

And yet, despite this consistent excellence it stays below the radar of most people.

Perhaps because only a little is made. Perhaps because only a fraction of that little ever makes it out of Italy. But whatever the reason, Avvoltore is sublime wine that no wine-lover should be missing out on.

At a price that puts other Super-Tuscans to shame, this seductive, opulent blend of sangiovese, cabernet sauvignon and syrah has had perhaps its best ever year in the excellent vintage of 2013.

We've managed to get our hands on just ten cases. Don't miss out on one of Tuscany's best values!

About the wine

This is quite a quite lovely Tuscan red!

A deep, dark ruby colour in the glass, it is intensely perfumed with notes of cassis, plum and raspberry. Liquorice, violet and smoky, spicy oak tones lurk beneath the ripe fruit. On tasting, the Avvoltore is layered, complex, opulent and seductive. Concentrated plum, chocolate and herbal flavours flood the palate along with fine-grained tannin that leads into an incredibly long finish tinged with touches of black pepper spice. Full-bodied and hedonistic yet pulling off that rare trick of retaining superb balance, this is clearly up there with the best of the Super-Tuscans!

Do decant this for a couple of hours if you are drinking now - it will give it a chance to spread its wings. It is absolutely delicious but will continue to mature and improve for the next decade at least.

Avvoltore spends about a year maturing in 225 ltr oak barriques which are 80% new. Once bottles it is left to relax and mature for a further 6 months before release.

About the winery

The Moris family arrived in the Maremma, in south west Tuscany in the 18th century from Spain and began farming 6000 hectares of land.

Focused primarily on agriculture – cereals, fruit and vegetables – it wasn’t until the 1990s that the family decided to concentrate on winemaking. Vine replanting began in earnest and today the property is considered as one of the leading producers in the area.

About the vineyard

Avvoltore is made using grapes harvested from vineyards planted on the Poggio dell’Avvoltore hill. Its clay- limestone soil produces wines with a powerful yet fine tannic structure.

The first vintage was made in 1988 and since then then the blend has undergone very few changes - Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah - and a lot of hard work!

95 points - Antonio Galloni
"The 2013 Avvoltore is one of the best recent editions of this wine I can remember tasting. A dark, virile wine, it is endowed with vertical structure and huge tannins to back up the fruit. Smoke, tar, licorice, dark spice and gravel infuse a core of blue and black fruit. The 2013 clearly needs time, but it is also superb, even at this early stage.

"Great tuscan wine for an reasonable price, shows that you don't need to go high up on price to drink a good wine. Full body, and high tannins" 5/5 Stars

"Very rich and complex with a need to breath long before tasting. Excellent aromas with flavors of nuts, cranberries and dark chocolate"  4.5/5 Stars

"Smooth and beautiful" 5/5 Stars

"Deep, profound, full bodied bouquet. Ripe dark cherries, raspberries, tobacco. Intense and complex experience." 4/5 Stars

"What a Tuscan. Complex berry aromas with a long lasting impression on the palate" 4.5/5 Stars

Other Offers

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
