We recently offered Moss Wood's flagship Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 - and the small amount we had sold in a matter of minutes...

So today we are pleased to offer its baby brother from the same vintage - the Ribbon Vale Cabernet Sauvignon 2015!

At half the price of the first wine and yet scored just 2 points less by Aussie wine guru Huon Hooke, this is a fantastic deal.

Sourced from a single vineyard just a kilometre away from the main Moss Wood vineyard, this beautiful wine displays all the skill and dedication that has made Moss Wood one of the great wine estates of Australia and arguably one of the finest – if not the finest in Margaret River.

Moss Wood's Cabernet is considered to be one of Australia's finest wines - but the Ribbon Vale Cabernet is hot on its heels!

"I cannot recall a better Ribbon Vale red" Huon Hooke

About the wine

A brilliantly youthful brick red in the glass, the nose is subtle but deep and complex, giving blackberry and red currants, mulberry and a floral lift reminiscent of violets, all sitting over notes of cedar, tar, herbs and spice. On the palate, this Ribbon Vale is gloriously concentrated, intense and powerful with a core of ripe, sweet, dark fruit balanced by acidit and extremely fine tannins. Finishing with great length, sweet fruit and spice, the structure, power and elegant balance are such that this great wine will have a long and brilliant life.

Though young, the Ribbon Vale is extremely drinkable. So much so that you'll struggle to keep your hands off it. Patience will be rewarded but if you can't resist, make sure you give it a good amount of time in a decanter and let it reveal its stunning charms!

To make the Ribbon Vale, each batch of grapes was hand-picked, destemmed then transferred to small open tanks for fermentation and hand plunged 3 times per day for extraction of colour and flavour. After fermentation the Cabernet Sauvignon was racked to 228 litre French oak barrels and the Cabernet Sauvignon received 19% new oak and the Merlot received 9%.

In December 2016 all the batches were racked to stainless steel for blending.  After blind tastings, the Cabernet Sauvignon was blended with 3% each of Merlot and Cabernet Franc.  The finished wine was then returned to barrel before bottling.

About the winery

Moss Wood are one of the great wine estates of Australia and arguably one of the finest – if not the finest in Margaret River.

Since 1984, Moss Wood has been owned by husband and wife team, Keith and Clare Mugford. Keith was appointed winemaker at Moss Wood in 1979 and it’s telling that the estate’s founder chose to sell it to Keith; believing – rightly - that Moss Wood would thrive and excel in his ownership.

Moss Wood is a specialist, high-quality winery and this clear focus drives every aspect of Keith and Clare’s work.

Their exacting viticulture ensures the production of grapes of excellent quality & they have created a stable of fine wines distinguished by their consistency over each vintage & their ability to age superbly.

The Moss Wood & Mugford names are synonymous with uncompromising quality.

About the vineyard

The Moss Wood and Ribbon Vale Vineyard are located in the Wilyabrup sub-region, the heart of the Margaret River wine region.

Moss Wood stretches to just shy of 12 hectares and is planted on gentle north and east facing slopes. Here the soils range from sandy loam to a gravelly, red brown loam, over clay subsoil.

Ribbon Vale was first planted in 1977 and covers 6.36 hectares on south and west facing slopes. Soils are classic gravelly loams over clay sub-soils.

In the vineyards soil conservation techniques of minimum tillage and mulching, maintains a healthy abundance of earth worms and soil microflora and fauna.

"
Almost ethereal cabernet sauvignon in an elegant rather than blockbuster style with cassis, new leather, spice, subtle dried herb and smoky oak flavours. A wine of restrained power with obvious cellaring potential - it opened up magnificently in the glass and deserves to be decanted."

96 points - Huon Hooke
"Deep, youthful red/purple colour with a shy, elusive nose. There are subtle violet and red fruit scents, and no greener notes, while the palate is gloriously deep, intense, powerfully structured and profound. The tannins and fruit are superbly integrated and the finish rolls on and on with great panache. There's an inner core of fruit sweetness balanced by crisp acidity. This should age superbly and build more complexity, becoming an outstanding wine in time. I cannot recall a better Ribbon Vale red."

Dense ruby red/purple with some floral notes. Absolutely lush with intense sweet dark fruits, while integrates very well with oak and tannins. A very good quality Cabernet for Moss Wood’s 2nd label."  4.5/5 Stars

"Full bodied and smooth, elegant wine. Pure enjoyment."  5/5 Stars

"Just love it; marginally less complex than the top range but it’s delicious French and complex"  4.5/5 Stars

"Given this is half the price of the premium cab it’s great price"  4/5 Stars

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
