Moss Wood are a legend - widely regarded as one of Australia's greatest wine producers!

Pioneers in the Margaret River region, which has built a reputation as the home of some of Australia's finest wines, Moss Wood have remained a down-to-earth family business despite their fame and success.

Clare and Keith Mugford - the husband and wife winemaking team and Moss Wood owners – are true craftsmen, producing consistently elegant, individual and poised wines with terrific ageing potential. The 2014 Ribbon Vale Merlot is no exception.

The result of a superb growing season, described by the Mugford's as "one of Margaret River’s very finest seasons", this 2014 Merlot is a true stunner - silky smooth with juicy cherry and blackberry fruits nicely supported by notes of spice and cedar.

This is a prime example of exactly why the wines of Margaret River are held in such high esteem - the power of ripe Australian fruit balanced by cool-climate elegance!

About the wine

On the nose there are delicate aromas of cherries, roses and blackberries and layers of complexity made up of spice, cedar and tar. There follows a juicy, firm palate with intense dark fruit notes of more cherry and blackberry, sitting over a well-balanced structure. There’s a good level of acidity and tannins are concentrated and firm but the texture is silky smooth and gives the wine terrific length.

This is top notch Aussie merlot with great power and concentration harnessed by a lovely elegance  - a hallmark of the great Margaret River wines.

Toi make the Ribbon Vale Merlot, grapes were hand-picked and destemmed before going into small fermenters and pumped over three times per day for extraction.

The merlot spent 15 days on the skin, 12 days for the cabernet franc. After pressing, each variety was racked to barrels, all 225 litre French oak.  Nine months later all of the batches were racked to stainless steel, tasted and the final blends assessed and only the very best chosen.

The blend (89% merlot, 11% cabernet franc) was then returned to barrel for further ageing.

About the vineyard

The Moss Wood and Ribbon Vale Vineyard are located in the Wilyabrup sub-region, the heart of the Margaret River wine region.

Moss Wood stretches to just shy of 12 hectares and is planted on gentle north and east facing slopes. Here the soils range from sandy loam to a gravelly, red brown loam, over clay subsoil.

Ribbon Vale was first planted in 1977 and covers 6.36 hectares on south and west facing slopes. Soils are classic gravelly loams over clay sub-soils.

In the vineyards soil conservation techniques of minimum tillage and mulching, maintains a healthy abundance of earth worms and soil microflora and fauna.

95 points
"It’s sturdily built for ageing although the fragrance entices now, brimming with red and black currants, black olives and rosemary. The palate is dominated by oak and significant tannins hence leaving it for the time being. The 11% cabernet franc just adds the X-factor.”

94 points
“The colour is deep and there are blackberry and dark-olive aromas with a patina of toasty oak, while the palate is medium to full-bodied with good intensity of red and blue fruits, spices and the barest herbal note. Good richness and fleshy extract. It really satisfies.”

93 points
"Quite an elegant and moderately complex merlot with new leather, bacon, earth, plum and red berry flavours together with a seasoning of spicy oak. Fine tannins give the wine a drying and rather lengthy finish. A serious red with cellaring potential."

"I really enjoyed this wine in the line up tonight. Smooth and feminine with berries and forest fruit. Medium to long finish....great wine and not as powerful as the cabs...but still shows its uhmph"  4/5 Stars

"This is delicious. I'm so going to invest in more of this wine"  4.5/5 Stars

"Full bodied and very smooth. One of the best"  5/5 Stars

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
