“Simply the best wine I’ve drunk to date.” Vivino user

When the Aussies talk about old vines, they don't mess around...

This incredible Shiraz from the legendary Peter Lehmann wine company is made from vines planted in 1885 and  - even more unusually - on their own roots!

The Barossa, unlike many of the world’s great wine regions, is phylloxera free, which has allowed these vines to mature into their thick, gnarly trunks and naturally sculpted forms without interference. Noted for their low yields, they produce fruit with superb intensity of flavour.

Peter Lehmann always had a philosophy of sourcing the best parcels of Barossa fruit that he could find, and this lives on in the VSV ('Very Special Vineyard') series of wines.

This Shiraz comes from the famed Ebenezer district, from a vineyard planted by the Schrapel family in 1885. The vines are now carefully tended by Ralph and Angela Schrapel, 6th generation Barossa wine growers (whose signature you will see on the wine label).

The wine is only made in the very best vintages when everything comes together to create the perfect conditions for these ancient vines to produce perfect fruit. Deep in colour and flavour, the wine is powerful but with lovely balance and varietal expression.

This 1885 VSV is a little piece of history and as such, a price of just £26.49 is an utter bargain!

About the wine

The colour is bright with a deep crimson hue leading to a complex bouquet showing abundant dark plums, spice and a hint of charred oak in the background. The palate is benchmark ‘1885’; soft and elegant with a long, intense, blue-fruited finish. This is a stylish, fruit driven dry red - clearly showing a sense of its Barossa origins but with a great balance. Nothing is overdone here and whilst it is rich and seductive, it retains finesse. Quite a remarkable wine!

VSV – Very Special Vineyard – wines are only made in exceptional years when a single site delivers the ultimate harmony of varietal and region.

Shiraz fruit is picked from the highly-prized Ebenezer vineyard that was planted by the Schrapel family in 1885. The 2015 harvest was an early vintage following a cool and dry growing season and timely rainfall as ripening began.

The grapes were fermented and macerated on their skins for 14 days, with partial barrel fermentation. The wine was matured in French oak hogsheads for 15 months before being bottled.

About the winery

Peter Lehmann’s winemaking career began with the Saltram Winery in 1959. In 1978 Saltram were faced with a fruit surplus and decided not to buy the grape grower’s fruit. Peter Lehmann set about raising the funds to pay them and in securing the necessary finance, the ‘Materson Barossa Vignerons’ winery was established. It wasn’t until 1982 that Peter Lehmann was persuaded to put his name to the winery.

In the two decades that followed, Peter Lehmann and his team created an impressive portfolio of wines, collecting awards aplenty as they went. Peter retired in 2002 and passed away in 2013 but his legacy continues to live on through the winery. In 2014 Peter Lehmann Wines was purchased by Casella Family Brands.

Peter Lehmann Wines works collaboratively with over 140 growers across the length and breadth of the region, many of whom have been involved with the company for decades. Through these strong bonds and generations of working with the region’s finest grape-growers, Peter Lehmann Wines continues to craft an exciting range of premium wines.

About the vineyard

Ebenezer, in the north-west of the Barossa is home to Ralph and Angela Schrapel who are sixth generation guardians of a very special patch of Shiraz planted by Ralph’s great-great-great grandfather in 1885.

Planted on red brown earth soils, at over 300m above sea level, this four-acre block is home to extremely low yielding, gnarled and twisted vines - planted on their own roots, no phylloxera here! - producing a red wine of rich colour and flavour intensity.

95 Points - James Halliday
"The Schrapel family in Ebenezer are 6th generation custodians of these 1885 shiraz vines, which again have produced a remarkable wine. Everything in its place on the more medium-weighted palate – the dark fruit, the tannins tucked in, the savoury overlay and the satisfying presence it offers."

94 Points - James Suckling (2014 vintage)
"Attractive rose-like perfume. The fruit carries this old vine wine with impressive style. Deep-set tannins have a smooth, long and extruded presence through the finish, showing great depth here. "

17/20 Points - Richard Hemming MW
"There’s a very lovely rosehip note alongside the black fruit here. Super clarity of flavour, and a typically soft and plump texture to the palate. Exemplary.”

"Very attractive peppery red and blackberries...Mouthful of blueberries and fine tannins with amazing length."  4/5 Stars

"Full ripe nose of blackberry, dark chocolate, fennel seed, black cherry & some mocha. Tastes intensely of blackberry with a back note of liquorice. Med+ refreshing acidity & med- tannins make this very drinkable & the finish is long & seductive."  4/5 Stars

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
