The folks at Rockburn must have thought all their Christmases had come at once when they harvested the 2015 vintage. Hot on the heels of the excellent 2014, here was what looked like another beautiful year for Pinot Noir.

And so it has proved now the wine is in bottle. The 2015 Rockburn Pinot Noir is even better than the superb 2014!

Already gaining glowing praise from the critics (a Gold Medal in the Global Pinot Masters 2017 competition, 95 points from Kiwi wine expert and Master of Wine, Bob Campbell) this promises to be one of the best Pinots produced here in the past decade.

Rockburn should be much more widely known, such are the quality of their wines, but for the moment it remains somewhat under the radar, which means you can still pick up this lovely Pinot Noir for £27.75.

Nigh on irrestible now (although good for another 4-5 years) and with its sweet, ripe fruit and elegant, silky taste this is absolutely perfect Christmas drinking!

About the wine

The 2015 vintage yielded beautiful fruit from each of Rockburn's sites, which were simply guided gently through to the bottle with minimal handling. Rockburn's “hands-off” approach delivers a pure expression of Central Otago to the glass; an expressive nose and deeply fruited palate displaying vibrant notes of red and black cherry, rich mocha and supple, silky tannins leading into a very long finish. As always this wine shows classic Rockburn elegance and balance.

In order to make the wine 90% wild yeasts were used for fermentation and the wine was matured for 10 months in French oak; 35% new, 18% 1 year old and 47% 2 year old.

About the winery

Cardiothoracic surgeon, Richard Bunton’s love affair with wine was inspired by a well-travelled uncle and his fellow students at university. It was an interest that led to the purchase of a 3 hectare hobby vineyard not far from Arrowtown in 1991. Steadily the hobby became a serious concern and a handful of hectares became several dozen.

In 2002 it was decided that the winery should be named Rockburn Central Otago to reflect the terroir of the vineyards and three years later, Malcom Francis joined as winemaker, having formerly being the assistant winemaker at Felton Road. In 2015 a new winery complex was built in Cromwell to keep up with the demand both at home and overseas.

About the vineyard

Central Otago is the world’s most southerly grape-growing region which, at 45 degrees south, has a climate like France’s Burgundy. Indeed, Central Otago has French immigrant, Jean Desire Ford to thank, as it was he who pioneered grape-growing and wine production in the region over a century ago.

The Rockburn vineyards are bounded on the west by mountains on whose seaward slopes are rain forests, which receive 5000mm of rain a year! To the east is a barren, moon-like landscape that received less than 25mm of rain a year. Situated between these extremes are the Rockburn vineyards where pinot noir of exceptional quality is grown.

95 Points & 5 Stars - Bob Campbell
"Deliciously drinkable pinot noir in a typical (for Rockburn) fruity style, with succulent plum and dark cherry flavours underpinned by subtle spice and oak characters. It really is a very appealing wine that will develop in bottle but is irresistible now"

94 Points & 5 Stars - Sam Kim
"
Wonderfully fruited and fragrant, the instantly appealing bouquet shows red/black cherry, plum, floral and cedar characters with hints of earthy mushroom and mixed spice notes. The palate is succulent and flavoursome, and offers terrific fruit power and richness, while remaining elegant and stylish. A gorgeous expression of Central Otago pinot. "

18.5/20 & 5 Stars - Raymond Chan
"
Even, dark ruby-red colour, a little lighter on the edge. This has an elegant, intense and penetrating nose with concentrated aromas of dark-red and black cherry fruit entwined with subtle thyme herb notes along with an amalgam of liquorice and spices. The aromatics are stylish and lender in proportion. Medium-full bodied, the palate is elegantly presented with good intensity and depth of spicy dark-red and black cherry fruit, melded with savoury herbs and nuances of spicy, nutty oak. The fruit forms a concentrated core and line, with balanced, fine-grained tannin extraction and light, refreshing acidity. The wine carries to an elegant, lingering, fine-textured finish. This is an elegant, finely concentrated Pinot Noir with flavours of black cherries, spice and thyme herbs on a fine-grained palate."

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
