Torbreck have long been at the forefront of serious Aussie Shiraz, making old vine beauties that fetch high prices amongst their avid followers.

But like all great wineries, they pay as much attention to their less expensive wines as they do their high-end rarities - and this devotion to quality at all levels is clearly shown by the 2016 Woodcutter's Shiraz.

With a huge 95 point score from top critic James Suckling and a price of just £19.75 per bottle, this is a serious wine in its own right as well as the perfect intro to the genius of Torbreck.

Since the 1990s, Torbreck Vintners have been sourcing top-quality Shiraz fruit from some of Barossa’s most exciting and best-quality vineyards and turning it into magnificent, critically-acclaimed wines, placing them at the forefront of Aussie winemakers.

This is new wave Barossa Shiraz, still ripe, concentrated and powerful - as you would expect - but with an improved freshness and balance. As James Suckling says of Australian Shiraz, “so many are now as refined and polished as the best of the northern Rhône Valley… "

This very lovely wine is wonderfully rich with layers of dark red fruits, spice and chocolate. It’s concentrated and mouth-filling yet always fresh and vibrant.

About the wine

The Woodcutter's Shiraz reflects the up and coming shiraz vineyards of the Barossa rather than the old vines that go into Torbreck's pricier wines. Full of deep, dark berry fruit, the 2016 vintage is one of the richest and most complex of recent years. Concentrated, opulent fruit with terrific freshness and balance. An incredible deep core of dark fruit gives way to an intense, textured mid-palate full of cassis, plum, spice and dark chocolate. Incredible value for money!

Like all wines in the Torbreck stable, the fruit is sourced from hand-harvested and hand-tended plots throughout the Northwestern Barossa Valley. The fruit is fermented in a combination of cement, wooden and stainless steel vats for a week and then basket pressed to well-seasoned hogsheads and French oak foudres for a year. The wine is bottled without use of either fining or filtration.

About the winery

Torbreck Vintners was founded by David Powell, who, in 1992, had begun to discover and clean up a few sections of dry-grown old vines. He nurtured these near lifeless vines back to health and was rewarded with a few small parcels that he made into wine.

David managed to raise enough money to ‘share-farm’ a run-down but ancient shiraz vineyard; a practice which involves paying the owner a percentage of the market rate for his grapes in return for totally managing the vineyard. This way of operating has allowed Torbreck to use fruit from the very best vineyards in the Barossa Valley. One of the many reasons they are considered to be one of Australia's best wineries.

A new winery and administration facility was completed in 2008 on land acquired from a neighbour. This has allowed Torbreck to have complete control of all aspects of the work in both the vineyard and winery. At this time Torbreck was purchased by Pete Knight.

About the vineyard

The grapes for the wines are sourced from various top vineyards across the Barossa Valley - including such famous areas as Marananga, Greenock, Seppeltsfield and Kalimna.

Each site brings a different quality to the wine, be it fruit-driven aromas, structure, concentration, freshness or acidity. To be able to blend from such a range of prime vineyards allows Torbreck to deliver wines of great balance, elegance and structure.

95 Points - James Suckling
"
This shows the greatness of the vintage with graphite, stone, oyster shell, blackberry, and licorice. Smoke undertone. Full body yet linear and energetic with a fabulous finish. A stunning wine. Great value for the quality."

"Wonderful quality for the price. A powerful and peppery Shiraz with notes of chocolate and black fruits, plums, and a nice and subtle oak finish, but very high alcohol. 4/5 Stars

"Velvety smooth with liquorice notes, black currants & low tannins. Punching above its weight. Good value for money. Enjoy4/5 Stars

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING
