LAST FEW BOTTLES!

An icon from an icon!

Vergelegen is one of South Africa's most famed wineries and the V is their flagship wine, one of South Africa's best wines.

Soft, silky and elegant, it is a wine designed to take on the world's best - and it does. Vergelegen are masters with Cabernet Sauvignon and the V, made from grapes harvested from a single, special vineyard, demonstrates just how great South African wines can be.

Produced by a world-class winery, in tiny quantities in only the best vintages and with the ability to age and improve over the next decade, the V represents good value at £59.99 - any equivalent from Napa or Bordeaux would cost at least double the amount!

We can only offer a few bottles, so do make sure you get your order in!

About the wine

The nose is complex, showing blackcurrants, red cherries, cedar wood, lead pencil and cigar box aromas. These develop in the glass and are joined by raspberry, black cherry, spice and a hint of gaminess. On the palate the wine is concentrated but elegant, with fine-grained tannins. These tannins soften even further in the glass, resulting in a luxurious wine with a long aftertaste.

The grapes were hand-picked and fermented in closed tanks. The young wine received a post fermentation maceration of 21 days, followed by malolactic fermentation in stainless steel. On completion of the malolactic fermentation the wine was racked into 100% new French oak. The V was matured in oak for 18 months, followed by 24 months in bottle before release.

About the winery

Founded on 1 February 1700, Vergelegen (meaning "situated far away"), has been under the ownership of some of the world's great explorers and visionaries, each of whom, in their own way, have helped shape Vergelegen to what it is today: a world-class Estate.

When AngloAmerican purchased the property in 1987, extensive investments were made in viticulture and in restoring the Estate's historic core, with a view to sharing the Estate with visitors worldwide.

Among the many projects undertaken on the Estate by Anglo American was an extensive programme of clearing invasive alien vegetation, land rehabilitation and restoration of the Estate's historic core. The vineyards were re-established following intensive climatic and soil tests. A detailed master plan was drawn up for the development of the farm and in 1992, an impressive, multi-leveled, sunken hilltop winery was built and opened by Baron Eric de Rothschild, owner of Château  Lafite (Bordeaux) in France. Today, Vergelegen competes with the top 100 wines of the world and positions itself among the leading conservers of Cape cultural heritage.

About the vineyard

The vineyard used for the production of the V is Stone Pine IV. This vineyard consists of two adjacent units on the west to northwest facing inland slopes of Schaapenberg. It is relatively sheltered from the prevailing breezes coming off False Bay and therefore enjoys a slightly warmer but still predominantly maritime climate. The two units are planted on Hutton and Glenrosa soils and are both well drained and slightly limiting on vigour, but still offer good support for the vines in adverse climatic conditions. This combination of soil, climate and site ensures full ripening of the fruit without excessively high sugar levels.

The climate at Vergelegen is mild due to its close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean at False Bay some six kilometres away which places the farm within the lower Region 111 according to the 'degree days' temperature classification. Vineyard sites range in altitude between 140m and 310m above sea level, with slopes facing north to north-west, and south to south-east.

95 Points - Tim Atkin MW
"Made as a varietal Cabernet Sauvignon since 2008, this is the top red at Vergelegen and demonstrates André van Rensburg’s mastery of the variety. It’s a focused, classically proportioned red, combining freshness with concentration, suppleness with structure. Aromatic and refined, it has plenty more to give."

"
Bright medium ruby. Vibrant dark red. Ripe aromas of cassis, plum, spices and cocoa powder. Densely packed and classically dry, showing lovely breadth and a fine-grained texture to its sweet plum, currant and spice flavors, with just a hint of peppery herbs to remind you of Cabernet. A more primary in style than the 2012 Reserve Cabernet, a bit inkier and mintier and less sweet by comparison and built for longer aging. Finishes with dusty tannins and excellent length."

"
Pure Cabernet Sauvignon from a single vineyard that was not that far from the fires in January 2017, the 2012 V spent 18 months in oak. It has a well-defined bouquet with intense blackberry and raspberry coulis aromas, cedar and pencil lead developing with time in the glass, although it needs more time to absorb the oak. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit infused with graphite, sweet and a little chewy in the mouth, salted licorice lingering on the aftertaste."

"Very complex mix of dark fruit, herbs and vanilla with a great balance. It’s still pretty young and has loads of aging potential. Classic and clean-cut Cab-heavy blend." 4.5/5 Stars

"Truly lovely. Substantial yet pleasing"  5/5 Stars

"Very well structured. balanced, subdued tannins"  4.5/5 Stars

"Fantastic full bodied wine. A bit earthness with lots of overriped berries, chocolate and vanilla makes it nice and balanced with long finish." 4/5 Stars

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
