With 28 gold medals, including 7 double golds, the 2014 Wakefield St Andrews Shiraz may well be one of Australia's most highly-awarded wines.

This is no fluke - only made in the best years, every time the St Andrews Shiraz is released it quickly collects a hatful of gold medals and superlative reviews. Little wonder that it is considered to be a benchmark for Clare Valley Shiraz!

We are thrilled to be able to be offering this stunning shiraz, one of Australia's best, for £29.99 (14% less than the usual UK RRP).

They talk at Wakefield of making wines of ‘unmatched style and quality’ and in this single vineyard shiraz they have certainly achieved something spectacular. It is laden with flavour and has a broad, complex palate that seems almost infinite.

We urge you to treat yourself… this is something very special indeed.

About the wine

The wine has a complex and enticing bouquet of dark berry fruit along with juicy black plum, spice, cedar and hints of liquorice, chocolate and roasted coffee. On the palate, the wine is rich and complex with layers of flavour. Dark berry fruits combine with lashings of coffee, chocolate and spice from high quality oak. The fruit and oak weight creates a multi-dimensional palate which is defined with well-balanced, elegant tannins. Hugely generous with textural complexity and a long, long finish.

The winemaking is, as you’d expect, attentive and quality driven. Once in the winery the fruit was transferred to headless barrels and inoculated with a specialist shiraz yeast strain for fermentation. The must was hand-plunged twice daily to aid gentle extraction and then the wine was left to soak on the skins for a further two weeks. Once pressed, the wine was then transferred back to the same oak barrels to complete the secondary malolactic fermentation. The blended wine was then transferred to high-quality water-bent American oak barrels where it matured for 18 months.

About the winery

Great things are invariably borne from passion and Mitchell Taylor’s grandfather was a man passionate about wine. Along with his sons, Bill and John, Bill Snr was a wine merchant in Sydney and had a deep love for claret that would, in the end, inspire the trio to make stunning wines of their own.

In 1969, they found a 178 hectare site by the Wakefield River in the Clare Valley. They were certain that the red bow, limestone soils (known today as terra rossa) would be conducive to crafting wines of the highest quality and they were right!

When t
heir inaugural release took home the trophy for best wine in the show at the Royal Adelaide Wine Show, Wakefield started very much as they have gone on since.

The seahorse that you’ll see on the Wakefield labels represents the fossilised remains of tiny seahorses that were found in the limestone bedrock and which gave confirmation that the area had once been the bed of an ancient inland sea.

About the vineyard

The grapes for this shiraz are sourced from a vineyard in the sub-region of Auburn. The vines are planted 350 meters above sea level where the benefit from a ‘Mediterranean’ climate, meaning a large diurnal temperature range with warm days, where the vines can bask in the sunlight and cold nights which offer rest and recuperation - essential for retaining intensity of flavour.

The St Andrews blocks have the Clare Valley’s famous ‘Terra Rossa’ soils which is red brown loam over limestone. Here the shiraz vines are planted on gently west-facing slopes.

An opaque dark purple in the glass, lightening to a bright crimson at the rim. Scents of black pepper and eucalyptus lace fleshy mulberry, black plum, and blackberry fruit. Velvety on the palate, it fills the mouth with thick black berry fruits, liquorice, and a note of mocha. The long after-flavour is fruit-driven, picking up a piquant blueberry syrup note that goes on and on. This is a delicious wine now, and should drink well for another 15 years or longer."

95 Points - Robert Whitley
This hot-rod Shiraz from Wakefield is a showy wine that dazzles consistently from vintage to vintage. The 2014 is rich and layered, showing aromas of ripe blueberry, blackberry and mulberry, an overlay of eucalyptus and a hint of spice. The finish is seemingly endless, with exceptional persistence of flavour.

"This vineyard produces exceptional reds. Definitely a competitor to Penfolds. This Shiraz is heavy, bold in flavour where it knocks you down and yet you keep coming back for more. Smooth flavour, complex and when left open to breathe it takes on a life of its own. Exceptional!!!!!"

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
