2012 was a fantastic vintage for Châteauneuf du Pape and one of its superstars was this fantastic Cuvée Anonyme from genius winemaker Xavier Vignon!

A 95 point stunner that makes a mockery of its low price, it competes with the very best Châteauneuf - wines that cost much, much more.

Described as 'thrilling' by robertparker.com, it is an incredible Châteauneuf du Pape in an incredible vintage.

Xavier Vignon is one of the Rhône's greatest winemakers and the list of estates he has consulted at reads like a roll call of the region's most famous names.

These fabulous connections are what allow him to make the Anonyme such a great wine. He has access to some amazing vineyards and grapes - so much so that he called the wine Anonyme as he was not allowed to let on where the grapes came from!

The Anonyme 2012 punches miles above its price point and is perhaps the vintage's greatest value Châteauneuf.

Understandably, it has been massively popular and we were only able to secure a few cases for Vivino customers. If you love Châteauneuf - or if you just want a brilliant wine at a great price - you don't want to miss this!

About the wine

Xavier Vignon took advantage of the excellent conditions of the 2012 vintage to make a cracking Châteauneuf!

It is grenache dominated but this wine fully exploits the rules allowing for up to thirteen varietals. The key is that all of the fruit is of the very highest quality, (the grenache coming from particularly old vines), and all contribute to this wine’s extraordinary power and structure. Ample and generous, the wine is as densely flavoured as its opaque colour suggests! It’s full to overflowing with aromas of wild blackberries, cassis, Mediterranean herbs, liquorice and earth. There’s a lovely savoury quality to the powerful, deep palate that has grilled notes and succulent, spicy ripe fruit. This is a captivating wine that remains supple and fresh to the end of its long, long finish.

To make Anonyme, grapes are harvested by hand and subjected to rigorous selection. They come from a number of parcels that represent all the major soil types of the region. Each grape variety is harvested and fermented separately. Once the blend is made, the wine is aged 48 months in new barrels and second use casks. It is a true masterpiece of winemaking.

About the winery

Xavier Vignon is one of the most sought after oenologists in southern France.

He now advises over 200 different companies, including some very big names. But that's not all. He also brings his full expertise to bear on his own winery, where he vinifies a few parcels that feature some of the Rhône's greatest terroirs.

On these terroirs are ancient Mourvèdre, Grenache and Syrah vines that provide concentrated juice for his exceptional wines. After harvesting and slow fermentation, the different plots are matured in separate wooden and concrete containers. Xavier Vignon gives the wines time and dedication- you can feel it with every seductive sip.

About the vineyard

Xavier Vignon is an oenologist and négotiant in the Rhône Valley with an extensive list of clients. Sometimes, in lieu of payment, he will take grapes!

This wine is selected from 15 different old vine parcels and almost all the allowed varieties of grapes are represented. The sources of these grapes are kept very secret, but we do know that the wine is Grenache dominant with the grapes selected from very old wines.

95 points - Jeb Dunnuck
The top wine from the portfolio, the 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvee Anonyme offers thrilling purity and focus in its lively dark fruits, roasted meats and underbrush-scented bouquet. Full-bodied, ripe and textured, with fantastic polish and sweetness to its tannin, it has a supple, forward feel, yet will easily evolve for 10-15 years."

"Luscious textures, sweet, ripe, juicy fruits, a boatload of kirsch, garrigue and earthy scents in the perfume and a long, sweet, ripe, spicy, red berry finish that is drinking well young"

"Fabulous notes of blackberry and currant fruit, big minerality, roasted meats and leather. Full-bodied, with beautiful freshness, big tannins and a layered, thrillingly concentrated mid-palate"  4.5/5 Stars

"A surprise wine at tasting. Big fruit on nose. Dry, med acidity, spice, dark chocolate and black cherry on palate. Will seek this wine out 4.5/5 Stars

"My perfect CDP. Excellent structure and balance. Ripe fruit without bring too sweet. Plum, blueberries, cedar, and a hint of vanilla and spice at the end. I'm not a fan of big tannins, so I am impressed by the smoothness of these tannins while still maintaining a full body...If I can keep from drinking everything I have then I would imagine they would age well over the next 3-5 years"  4.5/5 Stars

"This is what I am looking for in wines. Different scents, like earth, mushrooms, camembert, black fruits. Heavy structure, great balance and silky tanins. Big one4.5/5 Stars

"Fresh long stem roses, fresh tobacco leaves. Light to medium body with strawberry, black currant. Beautiful finesse and peppery finish, touch of acidity, with nice legs. Great strength and such great depth signature of a Rhone Valley high alcohol wine. Amazing CNDP!"  4.5/5 Stars

Other Offers

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
