"An estate that readers need to have on their radar is that of brothers Laurent and Dominique Courbis...The entire lineup is a treasure trove of quality wines" erobertparker.com

2015 was a simply fantastic year for the Northern Rhone, heartland of world-class Syrah, and it shows in this stunning 96 point St Joseph.

Les Royes is a single-vineyard that, thanks to its ‘amphitheatre’ shape and south-facing slopes, delivers grapes with superb flavour and great balance. The vineyard is on the edge of Cornas and it shows some of that appellation's power and concentration, without the price tag to go along with it!

2015 has given this full-bodied wine even more dense, silky fruit than usual and with the vintage's ripe tannin and elegant balance, has created a sublime Syrah that for just £28.95 per bottle, is quite incredible value for money.

We only have a few bottles to offer, but they are worth it. We agree with the Vivino member who gave the wine 5 stars, saying, “Quite simply sublime, one of the best Saint Josephs…”

About the wine

This lavishly-praised wine is deeply aromatic, with notes of black olives, black-cherry/raspberry fruit and a smoky, savoury, spiciness. On the palate it is polished, terrifically silky and densely fruity. Profound and complex, it shows the ripe fruit of the vintage along with ripe tannins that give it exceptional structure. It's pure and bright, elegant and balanced, yet powerful too. This is excellent wine-making in a classic St Joseph style. With a couple of hours in a decanter it is immensely enjoyable now, but give it a few years and it'll be outstanding - if you can wait!

Made from 100% Syrah, the grapes were harvested by hand, destemmed and lightly pressed. Vinification took place in sealed temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Maceration lasted ten days, during which time the desired levels of colour, flavour and tannins were extracted. The wine was aged in oak, of which 20% was new, for a period of 14 months.

About the winery

Domaine Courbis dates from the 16th century and has been handed down from father to son since the start of the 20th century. Now under the dynamic partnership of two brothers: Laurent, who is responsible for winemaking, and Dominique who looks after the vineyard.

The vineyard currently extends to 35 hectares (including eight hectares in Cornas, five hectares in Saint Joseph Blanc and 19 hectares in Saint Joseph Rouge) in the communes of Châteaubourg and Cornas. The vines are planted on steep hillsides facing South and West. The wine cellar is modern and equipped with temperature controlled stainless steel tanks and oak casks.

The wines of Domaine Courbis are of extremely high quality and are consistently met with worldwide acclaim.

About the vineyard

The Les Royes vineyard is a spectacular six hectare ‘amphitheatre‘ site in the appellation of Saint-Joseph. The vines thrive in this glorious south-facing spot, situated on the edge of Cornas. The soils are made up of clay and limestone, which contributes to the wine’s elegance.

96 Points
"
The 2015 Saint Joseph Les Royes offers a similar, if not slightly darker purple color to go with additional minerality, tons of cassis, graphite and charcoal aromatics, building tannin, and a great, great finish. Like a lot of 2015s, it's charming and approachable today, yet has the tannin and concentration to cruise in the cellar. This cuvée comes from a six-hectare, full south-facing vineyard in the southern part of the appellation, and was brought up in a mix of smaller barrels."

"
The inky black/blue-colored 2015 Saint Joseph Les Royes from the Courbis team was brought up in one-third each of new, once and twice-used barrels. It offers sensational notes of crème de cassis toasted bread, licorice and pen ink in a massive, rich, concentrated, layered style that is shocking in its depth and richness. It's a crazy good St Joseph."

"
Opaque ruby. Ripe dark berries, cherry liqueur, olive and pipe tobacco on the highly perfumed nose; a smoky element adds vivacity. Energetic blackberry, bitter cherry and violet pastille flavors show excellent clarity and a hint of licorice that builds with air. The smooth, smoke-tinged finish emphatically repeats the floral and licorice notes, and supple tannins build steadily while folding into the intense dark fruit."

"Best Syrah i ever tasted! Explosive aromas of ripe, dark red fruit, subdued complex spicy notes, full body with silky tannins - stunning wine!4.5/5 Stars

"A well rounded full wine, classic earthy Syrah but with body and interesting length4.5/5 Stars

"Very dark in color, but ooh so well balanced and not overbearing. Delicate floral nose. Plenty blackberries and dark plum fruit. Leather and earthy vibe with easy going tannins for such a young wine. Excellent 2015 vintage. I wish I could bring multiple cases of this back home4/5 Stars

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
