Here at Vivino, we love the wines from La Rioja Alta - and we are not alone...

“Quite simply, these are some of the finest Riojas that can grace your cellar" Neal Martin, robertparker.com

And it's not just the critics, over 26,000 Vivino users have awarded Viña Ardanza an average of 4.2 / 5 stars!

Produced only in the best vintages, the 2009 Viña Ardanza is another classically beautiful Rioja from this brilliant winery.

Rich and deep with deliciously ripe, sweet fruit and fantastic spicy notes, this is a Rioja with finesse and power -  a perfect combination.

The superb quality, value and relative maturity make a very compelling argument for this top Rioja and each release is highly anticipated. But such is the demand for the wine, we only have access to a few cases.

So if you are interested, please place your order as soon as possible to make sure you do not miss out!

About the wine

The 2009 Viña Ardanza is an outstanding dark-cherry red; bright and clean. On the nose it stands out for its fresh, spicy character, with hints of sweet cherries and blackcurrant mingled with notes of black pepper, tobacco, nutmeg, coffee, mocha and cinnamon. On the palate it is supremely balanced with a soft freshness, nice structure, and delicately elegant tannins. The finish is long, silky and elegant with liqueur-like notes of cherries and blackcurrants combining with toasty notes and sweet spices. An outstanding and classic Rioja that offers a huge amount of drinking pleasure right now, although it has the quality and structure to age beautifully.

The grapes were harvested manually and transported in refrigerated trucks to the winery. Alcoholic fermentation took place naturally, at controlled temperatures. Malolactic fermentation concluded at the end of the year.

In March 2010, the selected wines were put in barrels to start ageing separately: the Tempranillo for 36 months with six manual rackings in American oak barrels averaging 4 years in age and the Garnacha for 30 months with five manual rackings in American oak barrels with two and three years of age. The final blend took place after barrel ageing was completed. The wine was bottled in May 2014 where it rested until release.

About the winery

La Rioja Alta is widely recognised to be one of the finest wineries in the region and known for defining the traditional oak-aged style of Rioja. Founded on July 10th 1890 by five families, the descendants are still all important shareholders to this day. Indeed Guillermo de Aranzabal, president of La Rioja Alta, is the fifth generation of his family to work in the business.

La Rioja Alta owns four wineries – two in Rioja, one in Rias Baixas and one in Ribera del Duero. Producing around 2.25 million bottles annually as a group (1.4m is sold under the brand La Rioja Alta) the company owns 554 hectares, 392 of which are in Rioja.

There are two grounds on which La Rioja Alta remains firmly traditional  - it only uses American oak, and indeed makes its own barrels, and also releases its wines comparatively late to other producers having aged them in both barrel and bottle and only putting them on the market once they are ready to drink.

A company steeped in history, three of the company’s wines are named after members of the founding families – Alberdi, Ardanza and Arana.

About the vineyard

The Tempranillo grapes (80%) come from the 30-year-old La Cuesta and Montecillo vineyards, located in Fuenmayor y Cenicero.

For the first time in the history of the wine, the Garnacha (20%) comes from the La Pedriza vineyard in Tudelilla (Rioja Baja) at an altitude of 550 m above sea level. This 67 hectare property offers unbeatable conditions for growing this variety. Its nutrient-poor soil, covered with boulders, results in low grape yields (less than 5000 kg/ha) and significant varietal typicity, rich in aromas, with a pleasant, elegant structure.

This is the second vintage in which all the grapes come from the estate's own vineyards.

96 Points - James Suckling
"Very fresh and vivid 2009 with berries, dark spice and hints of walnuts. Full-bodied, reserved and so held back and muscular, but you don’t feel the tannins and the strength. A great wine.

95 points - Tim Atkin
"Ardanza is a classic, pan-regional Rioja, blending Tempranillo from the Rioja Alta with 20% Garnacha from Tudelilla in the Rioja Oriental. It’s a richer, plusher wine than the 2008, reflecting the warmer vintage, but it’s not remotely ponderous. Floral, fine and very complete with fennel and sweet Asian spices, tangy acidity and deftly handled American oak."

93+ points - Luis Gutiérrez
"...very balanced, serious and harmonious. The palate combines power with elegance, with some tannins, focused flavors, some chalky texture and a rustic touch that gives it character."

17+/20 - Richard Hemming

"Rich with vanilla and cream, backed up by deliciously ripe black fruit and firm, pert tannins. This is holding on to its youth convincingly, and oozes traditional Rioja typicality."

"So consistently good at price point. Excellent wine, classic Rioja4.5/5 Stars

"Nose of cinnamon and mild spice. Beautiful cherry notes and soft tannins. Long finish of oak and leather"  4.5/5 Stars

"Everything! Fruit, leather, tobacco, huge long finish. Absolutely lovely"  4.5/5 Stars

"Never really give 5 stars. Or rarely.....but £ for £ I think this is the best accessible Rioja on the market. Subtle and solid , dark fruits. Properly weathered and leathery. Can’t go wrong at this price bracket"  5/5 Stars

"This was an excellent wine with a depth and body that was very pleasant indeed. It had lovely long lingering tones and a smoothness full of red berries. Definitely one to repeat4/5 stars

Other Offers

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
