"How good are these Pinot Noirs? Damned good!" Wine Spectator

Duncan Forstyth, winemaker at Mt Edward is a man who excites strong opinions - maverick, genius, ingenious, insubordinate, pioneer and avant-garde  - you name it, he's been called it.

And little wonder, as the wine he produces at this small estate, a progressive, individual winery in Central Otago, is amongst the best in New Zealand!

At the heart of the winery is Pinot Noir and the desire to make wines that are just delicious  – textural, subtle, moreish wines – each different from the next, each unique to their place and the Mt Edward style.

And they've certainly suceeded, with the wines receiving plaudits across the wine world and recognised as one of the very best sources of Pinot Noir in New Zealand.

Annoyingly for us in the UK, very little makes it over here and what does is strictly allocated, so we can only offer a few bottles - make sure you get your order in as it won't last long!

About the wine

Beautiful aromatics; cherries and bright berry fruits mixed with some darker fruit notes plus hints of herb and spice. On the palate there is that same purity of fruit expression and a smooth and silky texture with just enough tannin to support the the depth and weight of the flavours. Not so much a big wine as possessing power; easily one of the best estate wines to come out of Mount Edward.

Vinified using open fermenters, hand plunging, natural yeasts, and 11 months in French oak – 20 % new – before racking and settling in tank for a further 3 months. Fermentation was carried out using de-stemmed fruit including the addition of 25% whole bunches.

About the winery

There are many characters in New Zealand winemaking and one of the largest is Duncan Forsyth.

Maverick or genius, planting vines in the cold of Otago takes some nerve. These vineyards are on the edge of what is possible, the climate is so marginal.

With a biodynamic approach and the reassuring chaos of a smallholding full of pigs and chickens, the wines win awards and praise worldwide proving that we should all try to be little bit different...

About the viticulture

Mount Edward's winemaking approach is traditional, using natural yeasts and minimal intervention at all stages to produce wines which reflect the vintage from which they came.

The Central Otago climate and soils are unique, with the parent rock being glacially derived schist. Most of the soils have been cultivated only a few times in the 100 years before the viticulturists arrived, and some not at all. The growing season is warm and dry with cool nights. It is a short season however, with a risk of frost early and late and they actively restrict crop levels managing the vine canopy to achieve balance and uniform ripeness regardless of variety.

96 points - James Suckling
This is in fine form, delivering a more concise and complex expression than has been seen under this label before. It's the brand of clever refinement that brings clarity and revelation in the wine. There's so much on offer. Dark and red cherries, forest wood, herbs, leaves and attractive spicy flavors. Tannins crest smoothly up through the finish."

94 points - Sam Kim
"Beautifully complex and fragrant, the bouquet shows dark cherry, clove, dried herb, floral and toasted almond characters. It is wonderfully weighted on the palate, delivering attractive fruit intensity together with rich savoury nuances, brilliantly supported by fine tannins. The wine is stylish and delectable, and offers fabulous drinking. "

93 Points - Joe Czerwinski
the 2015 Pinot Noir remains a medium-bodied offering, redolent of rose petals, black cherries and spice. Only 15% new oak was used, so it remains in the background, letting the fruit shine and leaving the fruit tannins to carry the structure. They spread out across the palate, fanning out on the finish to leave behind a gentle coating of silky dryness."

"I think I have found a new go to Bannockburn Pinot. They make some outstanding wine down there and this is one more to add to the list. Impressive bouquet, deep colour and balanced fruit and a real quality wine."  4/5 Stars

"Really nice NZ pinot. Drinking well. Sufficient fruit. Fine tannins. Lengthy palate. 4/5 Stars

"Nice, full length and complex Pinot Noir"  4/5 Stars

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
