One of Decanter's 'Most Exciting Wines of 2017', the Rodríguez Sanzo Las Tierras de Javier Rodríguez Original 2012 may be a mouthful of a name, but it is an awfully good wine!

Hailing from the the hot, arid region of Toro, north-west of Madrid and made using the local grape, tinta de toro, a variant of Rioja’s tempranillo from 60 year old plus vines; Las Tierras is a full-bodied gem with a deliciously sweet, juicy character.

Incredibly complex, powerful and intense, the old vines from which this is made yield so little fruit that there are only 6600 bottles made!

In winemaking terms, Toro has come on leaps and bounds in recent years. Winemakers are learning how to harness the super-ripe fruit their vines can yield and are producing beautifully powerful yet balanced wines that are a joy to drink.

The Las Tierras is one of the region's leading wines, despite its modest price tag.

A Vivino exclusive in the UK, this should not be missed!

About the wine

This blockbuster from Toro is full to overflowing with chewy black fruits, vanilla, caramel and sweet spice. There’s no question it’s a hefty red but its power and intensity are tamed by some serious winemaking skill. Fermentation and ageing in oak gives further weight and structure to the wine, corralling the fruit and adding vanilla, caramel and spicy notes too. When wines are this big, the risk is a loss of elegance but you need not concern yourself as the balance is spot-on, making the wine an absolute delight from start to finish!

Once in the winery the grapes were cooled with dry ice before being placed in wooden casks for fermentation. The grapes are then pressed and the juice is moved into both new 500 litre French oak casks and previously-used casks for malolactic fermentation. The wine spends the winter there before maturing in second-fill French (60%) and American (40%) oak for 12 months.

The company was established in 2003 and the winemaker is Javier Rodríguez

About the vineyard

The tinta de toro grapes for this wine are sourced from three separate vineyards, each with a distinctly different terroir.

San Román de Hornija was planted in 1945 and the top soils here are fairly shallow, sandy and with large stones. The subsoil is deep, with clay.

Morales de Toro meanwhile is much deeper and was planted in 1962.

The third vineyard in El Pego is the oldest, having been planted in 1875. Here the soil is sandy loam with a high pebble content.

The company take a sustainable approach in the vineyard, adopting both organic and biodynamic principles.

96 points - Verema

18/20 points - Ferran Centelles
Tasted blind. This is a surprising and outstanding wine. The nose is slightly dominated by the oak, showing toasted notes, caramel, cloves, vanilla and ripe blackberry. The palate is superbly shaped, keeping balance and elegance despite such an intense and ripe character. It has creamy tannins, extremely textured and superbly concentrated. There is excellent tannin management here. Expressive, dense, enormous and almost inky in texture. If you like concentrated and broad wine this is a bottle to look for."

"Full-bodied and rich, this is showing a torrent of coconut and vanilla oak merged with stewed plums and cherries. There is an intriguing herbal edge and a rough chew at the end."

'Grand' Gold Medal - Concours Mondial Bruxelles

"Love it. Plain and simple. Intense dark ruby colour lending to bold tannins that linger nicely on the palate. Plum and dark cherry tones are front and centre in this full body wine. A real crowd pleaser"  4/5 Stars

"This is very nice. Full flavoured with some fruit but the dry finish is where it shines. Dinner guests will be impressed if you bring this."  4/5 Stars

"Over decent Toro. Depth, body and lovely dryness."  4/5 Stars

"Full bodied, balanced, a happy wine."  4.5/5 Stars

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
