Champagne's sublime 2002 vintage should be firmly on the radar of any wine lover!

Getting increasingly difficult to find, the 2002's are drinking beautifully now and the best are some of the greatest Champagnes ever made.

All of which makes this 2002 Orpale Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs a rare opportunity not to be missed!

The cooperative that make this incredible wine supply some of Champagne's greatest names (think Tattinger Comtes de Champagnes, Dom Perignon...) but also keep some wine aside to make their own, highly acclaimed wines.

100% chardonnay from some of the most famous Grand Cru sites, the wine spends ten years on its lees, giving it an incredible breadth of flavour and complexity along with a lovely richness and weight on the palate.

For a mature Champagne from a legendary vintage, with 16 years of age, superlative critic reviews and a 4.2 rating from Vivino users, the Orpale is quite incredible value!

There is only a small amount available, so don't miss this rare offer!

About the wine

At first sight, the Orpale is a vivid and vibrant golden yellow. This Blanc de Blancs spent ten years maturing on its lees and it shows! The wine is supremely elegant with a fine, persistent mousse. Complex notes of lemon rind, toasted hazelnuts and acacia honey greet you on the nose, whilst the palate is vibrant, full-flavoured, rich and creamy. With the vintage's trademark richness and density giving the wine weight, the finish is exceptionally persistent and builds in intensity. This deserves a place amongst the pantheon of great Champagne!

The Orpale is drinking beautifully right now, but it's in no hurry and will age gracefully for another decade and probably even more.

The Orpale is made from chardonnay grapes only. A complex and elegant Blanc de Blancs, it spends an amazing 10 years on its lees before disgorgement.

About the winery

De Saint Gall champagnes are produced by Union Champagne who are a cooperative, created in 1966 and made up of thirteen smaller cooperatives.

Together they have 1260 hectares of vineyards situated in some of the most prestigious sites in Champagne; a significant proportion of which are grand cru. Some of the wine they produce is sold to famous Champagne houses but what they retain they make in to their own De Saint Gall champagnes.

About the vineyard

Chardonnay grapes for this Blanc de Blancs are sourced from the Grand Cru villages of Cramant, Oger and Mesnil sur Oger.

96 Points - James Suckling
This is really rich and incredible with layers of fruit and a fresh finish. A pure chardonnay that shows wonderful depth of fruit and length. Very vinous. Comte de Champagne competitor from a cooperative. Don't miss it."

95 Points - Chiara Giovoni
The Champagne has an intense and bright golden colour and a delicate effervescence. The aroma is the epitome of chardonnay complexity with notes of acacia honey and slightly grille dried fruit, almond, apricot and barely making it buttery and inviting with its vein of candied ginger which is a preview of the freshness that will seduce the palate."

94 Points - Richard Juhlin
The cooperative’s wines are ingredients in, for examples, Tattinger Comtes de Champagne, Grand Siècle and Dom Pérignon… The cuvée de prestige Orpale is a stunning wine that I buy every vintage and the 2002 is no exception."

Gold Outstanding Award & Vintage Champagne Trophy - IWSC 2016
"...elegance, balance and amazing depth. A masterpiece of the vintage with an amazing future."

"Winner! The smell alludes to its class. Lemon pie with caramelised meringue and sliced green apple. Great poise. Lively Bubbles that bring delicate white flower, and a kick ass zip of lime that hits the back of the throat in a poised way balanced with touches of cream and butter...this is a steal, stock up!"  5/5 Stars

"Youngster lemon shortbread nose, sharp precise focused palate with crispy crunchy minerals and acidity, lemon all the way with hints of pear/grape and some toast notes after some breathing/heating, lovely salty lemon finish....half a star extra for the potential...."  4.5 / 5 stars

"Fine bubbles. Great toasted, buttered, apricot dry nose. Mineral. Very complex. Close to a white Burgundy. Very delicate. Great length. Excellent." 5/5 Stars

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
