Torres Mas La Plana is one of the most profoundly delicious and sought-after red wines in the whole of Spain.

Only a small amount of this super high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon is made each year from a superb parcel of 50 year old vines.

Since it beat Latour, Lafite and the other Bordeaux 1st Growths at the Gault Milau Wine Olympics in 1979, Torres Mas La Plana is regularly acclaimed as one of the best wines of Spain and has earned a place among the world's truly iconic, cult wines.

Vintage after vintage, Mas La Plana benefits from the investment in quality that Torres is famous for  - and the 2013 is one of the best Mas La Planas yet made.

A wine that would fetch three figures were it produced in Bordeaux, the price of Mas La Plana has remained extremely reasonable and represents great value for this amount of quality!

About the wine

The 29-hectare Mas la Plana vineyard is one of the finest in the Torres Estate. The best parcels of Cabernet Sauvignon are selected to produce this superb wine. Aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels, the wine is both voluptuous and powerful with great ageing potential. A legendary wine (previously known as Black Label) and no stranger to winning major awards!

Rich and deep, with black fruit and violet notes. The characteristically intense fruit aroma of the Mas La Plana terroir meets notes of toast, white chocolate and spices (clove, pepper). Expansive, mouth-filling yet lively on the palate. Mature tannins promise a bright future and excellent aging potential.

About the winery

Whilst the Torres family have been involved in making wine in Catalunya for over 300 years, it was not until 1870 that the house of Torres was officially established. Today, from the fifth generation, Miguel Torres is at the helm; the principles of innovation and attention to detail continue to be the cornerstones of the house. In 1966, they began planting non-traditional varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay; whilst in 1970, they began using cold-fermentation to produce fresh and fruity whites, today Torres is known for blending tradition with innovation.

In 1999, the Wine Spectator magazine recognised Torres as The Most Important Winery in Spain and in 2002 Miguel Torres was named Man of the Year by Decanter Magazine. In 2006, Wine Enthusiast Magazine awarded Torres the Best European Winery trophy, and most recently in 2014 Torres was named the World’s Most Admired Wine Brand by Drinks International.

About the vineyard

Mas La Plana is a very small vineyard in the Penedes DO where some of the world's finest Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are grown. These are used to make a strictly limited quantities of Torres’ most prestigious red wine.

The first harvest from Mas La Plana, as we know it today, was carried out in 1970. The first plots had been planted a few years before, from 1966 onwards. Very deep soil with basic pH, moderate water retention capacity and medium active lime content. Made up of gravel (limestone, dolostone) and alluvial limestone from the Miocene age.

About the winemaker

Miguel Torres comes across as a modest man, but one with a quiet authority. He knows his stuff, but wears the knowledge lightly. Back in 1982, when there were problems with the family succession (his father wouldn’t retire and let go of the company), Miguel took a sabbatical year out and went and studied at Montpellier, brushing up his winemaking and viticulture knowledge. When he returned to the company he brought this new knowledge back and applied it. Today Torres spend €3 million a year on their viticultural and winemaking research, tackling some of the hot topics in wine science. This innovation and drive for quality has seen them established ever more firmly as one of Spain's Leading Houses.

96 points -  Decanter
"Torres’ famous single vineyard wine, Mas La Plana Cabernet Sauvignon, needs little introduction to wine lovers. But just for the record, it dates back to 1970 with vines first planted in the Alt Penedès region in 1964...
2013 was clearly a good year with a wet spring, average summer and long, dry ripening period....Deep colour with a shy muted nose. The palate is much more expressive with tobacco, cedar and floral notes. Elegantly streamlined tannins and fine acidity frame a full-ish bodied Mas La Plana. The fruit has almost entirely subsumed the oak and exhibits sweet crushed blackcurrant with a twist of cream, iron and minerals on the long seamless finish. Super elegant with real personality."

93+ points - Luis Guttierrez

"...It's vibrant, tasty and lively, with focused and clean aromas and flavors and polished and elegant tannins. It has a tasty, long finish, lifted by the freshness and a chalky, mineral, almost salty touch. This feels long-lived through balance and good acidity..."

"
Aromas of currants and blackberries with hints of dried flowers and spices. Extremely aromatic. Medium to full body, firm and very silky with beautiful fruit and wonderful length. A juicy and fine wine. Racy and fine."

"This is a classic big bodied Cabernet Sauvignon from 60 year old vines 250m above sea level...rich cassis & tobacco with a leafy edge, great complexity & a really long lingering blackcurrant finish"  4.5/5 points

"One of the best cabernet tried by me. The taste is solid and full. Smell is penetrating and strong reflecting variety of cabernet." 4.5/5 Stars

"Wow, absolutely great wine with tons of flavour. By far the best buy from our trip to Spain!"  5/5 Stars

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
