LAST FEW BOTTLES!

"In the context of world-class Spanish wines, which this one is, there's truly outstanding value here." Vinous

CVNE Imperial Gran Reserva is one of the most profoundly delicious and sought-after red wines in Rioja, and indeed in Spain, so we are exceptionally pleased to offer a small amount of the 2010 vintage with a fantastic 18% discount from the normal retail price!

Only a tiny amount of this super-fine Rioja is made each year, using the best grapes from the finest vineyards, and it ages magnificently. Always in demand, it has to be sold each vintage on allocation only.

This is an estate where the focus is entirely on quality - and a track record of Trophies, Golds and high-scoring points - not to mention a huge 4.3/5 Vivino rating from over 7000 users - certainly backs this up.

The 2010 vintage was superb, producing wines with balance, structure and freshness. It is the best vintage since 2005 and Imperial have excelled themselves.

Imperial Gran Reserva has been one of the truly iconic, cult wines of Rioja for well over 130 years. The 2010 is not a wine to be missed - especially at such a super price!

About the wine

An intense ruby red in the glass, the nose is rich and enticing with black and red berry fruit, dried flowers, cedar and smoky cigar box notes. Superb density and concentration on the palate is framed by fine, supple tannins. A silken texture and delicious black cherry fruit merge into a spicy, fresh, savoury and extremely long finish. Incredibly well-balanced and refined, this has everything necessary for a long and beautiful life. Approachable now with a decent decant, it will probably still be lovely 30 years from now!

Imperial’s Gran Reserva is about as fine as Rioja gets. Its magic lies in the incredible layers of intricate flavour that the wine slowly reveals as it ages. Yet this style isn’t set in stone – the ‘recipe’ has developed over a century. The grape mix has ‘upped’ the Tempranillo (85%) portion and discarded white Viura and the advantages of modern know-how have been absorbed, without losing any of the wine’s inherent character. Ageing in barrel once lasted up to 12 years, but now the wine spends three years (still extensive) in both American (70%) and French (30%) oak barrels, with another four in bottle.

All the most labour-intensive measures are employed for this showpiece Gran Reserva – the grapes are carefully selected, then hand harvested into small baskets, destalked, cooled and macerated for an extensive period for colour and flavour, before a slow, gentle fermentation in old oak and stainless steel vats and three years maturation in American and French oak casks. Its journey isn’t finished there – it takes another 36 months’ ageing in bottle before this top-class wine is ready for release.

About the winery

“One of Rioja's best-known and most-loved names” Decanter

There is nothing ordinary about the great Rioja bodega of C.V.N.E. Even its barrel cellar, designed by the same architect as the Eiffel tower, stands out for its column-less construction. The 5th generation winery was founded in 1879 by the brothers Eusebio and Raimundo Real de Asúa. They established the estate in the Rioja Alta and quickly gained an impressive name for quality, gaining top international Golds from 1888 onwards and the Grand Prize at the 1894 Universal Exhibition in Antwerp. By 1900, C.V.N.E stood out for its stock of unusually old vintages (most cellars sold bottles as quickly as they could) – a reputation it still holds.

The bodega’s initials stand for Compania Vinicola del Norte de España, but is known locally as CUNE (coonay) and internationally as C.V.N.E. Despite their reputation for tradition, they have always led the field – Rioja’s first to estate-bottle and export its wines, the leaders in long-cellared bottles, first to design a purely gravity-fed cellar (1989), first to experiment with high-density vineyard planting (2006) and in 2004, they opened probably Spain’s most technically advanced cellar, inaugurated by King Juan Carlos II. As Decanter wrote“CVNE has always prided itself on innovation and being ahead of the winemaking curve.”

At 137 years old, this historic producer now has three wineries, but it is their highly sought-after C.V.N.E. that produces the much-loved traditional Imperial wines (from a separate cellar housed within C.V.N.E.), which amaze the world with their layers of delicately nuanced flavours and ability to age for years.

About the vineyard

The fruit for Imperial Gran Reserva comes from a specific area in Alta’s Villalba – 28 hectares owned by Imperial, with a little from close by Briones and Matalvo. These vineyards are C.V.N.E.’s oldest and highest-grown, old-bush vines upward of 30 years, producing very low yields of fine quality grapes on the iron-rich, limestone and clay soils.

These produce full-bodied wines, medium in alcohol and, because of the cooling influence of the Atlantic, with excellent acidity – one of the secrets of this wine’s remarkable ageing ability. The results are outstanding - it's regularly rated among the very best wines of Spain!

"Old vine parcels in Briones and Villalba provide the fruit for this exceptional blend of Tempranillo with 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo. This is a wine to drink now or, better still, cellar for a decade or more: sweet oak, black fruits, Asian spices and remarkable focus and freshness. Great value, too."

"
Certain wines exude a sense of elevated excellence. This one gets to that level via aromas of spice cake, baked plum and tobacco aromas. A stocky saturated palate is structured and built to age, while this tastes of cool blue fruits, herbs, coffee and chocolate. A smoothly textured finish deals cocoa and mocha notes."

"
A masculine, decadent nose with youthful fruit and nutty character. The palate is juicy and intriguing, with a complex savoury structure, perfumed violet and black cherry notes."

"
We're in for a treat with the 2010 Imperial Gran Reserva, a classic among classics in a classic vintage. It's very spicy and still slightly oaky, with ripe fruit without any excess; it is a serious, somehow Bordeaux-like, less-perfumed red. The palate shows that seriousness, with some dusty tannins and a dry finish. The texture is a little earthy, very good for food. This could be drunk now, but I'd give it some time in the bottle. The oak feels very nicely integrated, less noticeable than in warmer vintages like 2009. A very good vintage for this bottling."

"Vivid ruby-red. Smoky oak-accented red berries, cherry pit, incense and mocha aromas show outstanding clarity and vivacity. Sweet, expansive, palate-staining raspberry, cherry pie, vanilla and floral pastille flavors fan out steadily on the back half. The smoky note reemerges on an impressively long, floral- and spice-driven finish that's given shape by supple, harmonious tannins. In the context of world-class Spanish wines, which this one is, there's truly outstanding value here."

"..this gran reserva 2010 started off as very tight and intense on tannines and strained oak. It took two hours to develop into a superb smooth and great traditional rioja. And how great it became eventually."  4.5/5 Stars

"After two hours in the decanter, it showed a ripe black fruit with many layers of texture and tastes ... earthy, minerality and acidity very balanced, a fantastic wine .after 3 hours, the fruit continued in the background, but with the box of cigars in the foreground with nuances of the same fruit, now less intense, the tannins that were more striking, became more integrated , the taste goes on in your mouth for minutes"  4.5/5 Stars

"New cedar and extracted dark fruits, wrapped in a pcakage of suplle tannin and round mouth feel. Spice, plum and beautifully integrated flavours. This is a beautiful Rioja"  4.5/5 Stars

"Everything a Rioja should be"  5 Stars

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
