With its very old vines grown on extremely steep slopes, Priorat is one of the most fascinating areas of Spain.

A meteoric rise over the last 40 years has seen it recover from backwoods obscurity to global fame due to the rich, powerful wines being produced by pioneering winemakers in the region - wines that have found huge favour with both critic and drinker alike!

Mid-way between Priorat's capital, Falset, and the comparatively cooler area of Porrera, sits the Ferrer Bobet winery amid incredible scenery of jagged mountains and ancient vineyards.

Created by friends Raül Bobet (eminent winemaker) and Sergi Ferrer-Salat pharmaceutical tycoon turned wine lover), both united in a fierce love for the region and its wines, Ferrer Bobet may be one of the newer wineries in Priorat, but already it is one of the most prominent.

And little wonder when the wines are as good as this 2015 Vinyes Velles.

Made from some of the oldest vines in the region at 100 years plus, planted on the famous 'licorella' slate soils, the wine marries power, richness and intensity to minerality and freshness in a way that only the best Priorat manages to do.

Despite having picked up huge and well-deserved critic scores, including 97 points and a Platinum 'Best in Show' Trophy from the Decanter World Wine Awards, Ferrer Bobet have kept their prices extremely reasonable compared to others in the area and as a result are highly sought-after.

We've managed to pick up just ten cases for Vivino customers - imported directly from the winery. This is an offer not to be missed!

About the wine

This extraordinary Priorat has absolutely stunning depth and breadth; the black fruits are ripe and luscious with accompanying baking spices, leather, graphite and floral notes. Richly complex with layer upon layer of dark cherry and blackberry fruit, plum, graphite and earth allied to a satin-smooth texture, very fine tannins and a fresh acidity that keeps the wine balanced and eminently drinkable.  With its rich, intense fruit and beautiful minerality, this is a wine that easily holds the attention to the end of its lengthy, balanced finale. Stunning and a wine that simply shouts of the old vines and slate soils of Priorat.

The Vinyes Velles is wonderful drinking now but we highly recommend allowing it at least a couple of hours in a decanter first.

A blend of 70% carignan and garnacha from ancient vineyards in Porrera, the vines grow in hills so steep that they have to be worked entirely by hand.

Meticulous attention to detail is the key here and the harvest is sorted berry by berry on a double sorting table before being fermented in both French oak vats and stainless-steel tanks. The wine is then aged for fine-grain French oak barrels with a medium-light toast before being bottled without fining or filtration and undergoing a further 11 months in bottle before release.

About the winery

Ferrer Bobet is owned by two long-standing friends, Sergi Ferrer-Salat and Raül Bobet whose shared passion for wine and devotion to Priorat has led them to make top-class wines since their inaugural vintage in 2008.

One of the most exciting new ventures in Spain, the winery was built with great care and thought; the design guaranteeing an optimal workflow, using gravity to run the whole winemaking process, from when the fruit arrives to bottling.

About the vineyard

The Vinyes Velles is made from 100 year plus old vines sourced from vineyards located in Porrera, one of the coolest areas in Priorat.

These sites benefit from the cooling north-easterly winds from the Mediterranean and there’s a marked temperature variation between night and day which guarantees ripe, aromatically complex fruit with good freshness and acidity.

The vineyards are nearly all planted on the famous slate soils that the local refer to as 'llicorella' and from which the finest Priorat wines come.

97 points & Platinum 'Best In Show' - Decanter World Wine Awards
"Deep, dark though not saturated black-red. Dense, close-grained aromas of great subtlety and complexity: a sense of stone and savoury depths as well as sweet yet austere black fruits. Deep, dark, vivid and profound yet provocative flavours which, as the aromas suggested, tread the fine line between sweetness and austerity (thanks to the Carignan-dominated blend). There is great complexity and finesse here."

95 points - Guia Penin

94 points - James Suckling
"This really captures the freshness of the carignan grape with its bright cherry character. Medium-to full-bodied with spice from the grenache and excellent vitality on the long, crisp finish."

18/20 points - Ferran Centelles (2014 vintage)
"Very intense and flavourful, showing blackcurrants, plums, sweet spices and good-quality oak aromas. The nose is ambitious and promising. On the palate it is powerful, tight and very juicy. Delightful layers of concentrated dark fruit. Very impressive and fleshy. Top marks for the Carinyena (Carignan)!"

96 points - Jeb Dunnuck (2014 vintage)
"...it sports a crazy purple color as well as sensational notes of plums, liquid violets, blackberries, graphite, and a damp earth-like minerality. This full-bodied, incredibly pure Priorat has integrated acidity, a sexy, layered texture, no hard edges, and a great, great finish. It’s an awesome expression of Carinyana to enjoy over the coming decade."

"Best in show, my personal favorite, Decanter Best in Show. Deep red, dense, full bodied, great fruity aroma, pallet of red and black fruits, minerals and earth. Balanced yet succulent. Complex, long finish. Just want more of this one...4.5/5 Stars

"Big flavours, ripe tannins and yet very subtle. Fully recommend"  5/5 Stars

"Dark fruit, candied red, chocolate, and spices. Long finish4.5/5 Stars

"... I really like this Vinyes Velles. 100 year old vines grown on Priorat's steep licorella slate soils, 70% Carignan, 30% Grenache. 15m in French oak, not new. It's an accomplished wine, polished and complex, vibrant red fruit and minerals..."  4/5 Stars

Other Offers

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
