Unlike any other Manzanilla, the 'En Rama' is made using 'free-run juice' and fermented using natural yeasts. Unfined and unfiltered, it is taken straight from the barrel in the bodega before being bottled.

About the wine

The ‘En Rama’ is even more intensely flavoured than Hidalgo's basic Manzanilla, the La Gitana.

Kept in barrel by the sea, so there is ozone on the nose, a real hint of that Sanlucar sea breeze, then lemon, creamy notes and minerality hitting the palate, followed by Manzanilla nuttiness and definite salty tang. The finish is bone dry but incredibly long. Refreshing, electrifying and like no other wine in the world, this must surely be one of the planet's greatest wine values!

En Rama only came into existence in 2010, when leading Manzanilla producer Hidalgo decided to show off the full flavour of this extraordinary wine by bottling almost direct from the barrel. Its amazing success shows they knew what they were doing, and each release is eagerly awaited by critics and wine lovers alike.

About the winery

The great popularity of Javier Hidalgo’s ‘La Gitana’ can be attributed to the consistently great quality of his Sanlucar de Barrameda Manzanilla Fino” - Patrick Sandeman

Founded in 1792, the house of Hidalgo in Sanlucar do Barrameda is now synonymous with fine Manzanilla. Distinct from Fino Sherry, this style of Jerez wine has a fabulous saltiness which derives from the location of the winery right by the sea at Puerto Santa Maria. 

Don Jose Pantaleón Hidalgo started the business, when he bought from his father in law Don Roque Vejarano a simple cellar. By the nineteenth century when the company had grown into one of the largest in the region and the definitive producer of Manzanilla.

The name refers to its flagship product, which, backed by several important international awards, is the most popular Manzanilla in both national and international markets. The winery uses grapes from its own vineyards, located in Balbaina and Miraflores, considered the best in the area. The subsequent wine is aged in the classic solera, with 14 ‘layers’ or ‘scales’ of barrels benefitting from the magnificent climate.

Now a new generation is discovering this stylish, uber dry wine for itself, swapping that pre-dinner glass of Sauvignon Blanc for the traditional pleasures of Sherry or Manzanilla. The En Rama version of Hidalgo’s signature Manzanilla is limited production and intended to showcase the full flavours of the wine direct from the barrel, with only the slightest filtration.

About the vineyard

Hidalgo has cornered some of the finest vineyards in the Manzanilla district, including the highly rated pagos Miraflores and Balbaina. The grapes are of course classic Palomino, and the soils lend them a wonderful saltiness and minerality, which is at the core of these wines.

About the winemaker

The fifth generation of a family like Hidalgo has a handle on how to please the palate: Javier had the brilliant notion of releasing some special wines to augment the company’s existing offering. These include a single vineyard Amontillado and Oloroso as well as the En Rama Manzanilla.  Since 2010, the En Rama’s reputation has soared. It’s rare, and worth seeking out!

"My pulse quickens at this time of year when La Gitana’s En Rama is shipped over to the UK for its annual, limited-release run.  This is the wild, revved up, mesmerising version of the everyday glugger, La Gitana Manzanilla, itself a stunning, bone dry wine.  Made from free run juice and using only natural yeasts for fermentation this is one of the most unique and otherworldly wines on the planet.  The term ‘En Rama’ means that this Sherry is unfiltered and unfined, so it is effectively like drinking it straight from the barrel.  You must track it down at all costs if you love dry Sherry"

It's a selection of the 35 800-liter oak barrels that compose the La Guita solera. They do two bottlings per year, one in spring and another one in autumn. TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:


  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.


SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.


Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.


If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.


TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.


You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.


Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
