A mini-Brunello for a mini price!

Pedigree doesn’t always mean a big price tag, and Molina di Sant’Antimo proves it.

Their Asso 2015 is made from the same grape as Brunello, Sangiovese, and in exactly the same place. But because the wine also has a touch of Merlot and doesn't spend years in oak, they can't call it Brunello. Instead it has to be called Toscana IGT -  a category used for many Super-Tuscans.

Offering concentration, richness and great aromatic depth, it's a quarter of the price that it would fetch if it read 'Brunello' on the label and serious value at just £11.75 per bottle...

With 97 points from Luca Maroni, 92 from James Suckling and irresistably drinkable, this is a wine not to be missed!

About the wine

Don’t be put off by the Asso’s bargain price tag, this wine blends declassified Brunello grapes with a dash of Merlot, giving a New World edge to a classic take on Tuscany.

The wine has a lot of power and structure, and it presents a fragrant bouquet of cherries and raspberries, as well as touches of liquorice, graphite and vanilla. Filled with juicy red fruit and just a hint of earth, this full, deep wine shows grip and fine tannin from the Sangiovese, refined by velvet and silk from the Merlot. Rounded, soft and very drinkable, it's another example of what Tuscany does so well - creating powerful wines that still retain elegance and finesse.

Like most Italian wines, Asso pairs perfectly with all types of food, but to see it at its very best, open a bottle with a steak or tomato-based pasta sauces - and prepare to be wowed!

The Molino di Sant'Antimo cellar is situated in the woods, it covers about 800 square metres and so the wine is produced in the best possible conditions.

Vinification takes place in modern steel barrels. The area reserved for the aging process houses large French oak barrels from Alliers and barriques of both French and American oak.

About the winery

Winemaker Carlo Vittori already had a flourishing wine career as one of Italy’s most sought-after vineyard consultants, working at the likes of well-known Brunello houses Val di Suga and Castello Romitorio, but like most wine lovers, he couldn’t resist the chance to put new life into an ancient vineyard, and Molina di Sant’Antimo was born.

Across long-abandoned land in Tuscany, Vittori was a pioneer with a dedication to Sangiovese and the history of the region’s sloping hills. Now, he cultivates forty hectares of gorgeous, south-facing vines in the Brunello and Chianti Colli Senesi subregions of Tuscany, and his wines speak for themselves, racking up coveted critic scores and fans worldwide.

About the vineyard

With hills oriented southwest, focused on the afternoon and evening sun, Molino di Sant 'Antimo wines grow at 200-250 meters above sea level. Mediterranean air currents bring coolness and fine saltiness along the Orcia Valley, while Monte Amiata protects the land from cold northerly winds. This provides perfect conditions for top quality grapes.

The domain covers about 40 hectares of land, which includes olive trees and a natural forest in addition to vineyards. The soil is a mixture of clay and mineral rock ideal for the region.

97 Points - Luca Maroni
"A masterpiece that expresses maximum mastery of viticulture and enological application... Powerful fruit shines on the palate with a perfect and harmonious balance of flavor...Simply among the best Italian reds for its fantastic combination of concentration, expression and harmony."

92 Points - James Suckling
"A red with smoky character, cherries, red plums and white chocolate. Medium to full body, firm and polished tannins and a deep finish. Drink or hold."

"Made me want to go back to Toscana and Montalcino! Full bodied power and elegance. I will (try to) save some bottles to experience how this great wine improves.4/5 Stars

"Excellent aromas of bing cherries and subtle cedar and leather. The palate is bursting with cherry and dark chocolate and finishes with an interesting tartness - however still very smooth with balanced tannins from start to finish. Paired well with maple glazed pork with toasted pecan sweet potatoes. We really enjoyed this wine. 4.5/5 Stars

"Impeccable price quality...Better the next day after having had some air"  4/5 Stars

"Fantastic bold fruity up front with earthy finishes. Smooth through out. Very balanced and a tartness lingers. Love this wine. Will keep a bottle on hand"  4.5/5 Stars

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
