"...So exciting." James Suckling, Top 100 Italian Wines of 2017

While other wineries may describe their vineyards as old vines when they reach 30 or 40 years old, when it comes to Blu Onice, they really mean it!

Produced from ancient vines that are up to 120 years old, this lovely wine offers a depth and concentration that can be hard to find in lower-priced wines.

Just £16.49 is an incredible price for a wine that offers so much and is rated so highly:

  • 97 points from Luca Maroni
  • 95 points from James Suckling (and one of his Top 100 Italian wines of 2017)
  • A superb 4.2 out of 5 stars from Vivino reviewers!

Bu Onice is made from 100% Aglianico, known as the 'Barolo of the South' for its ability to produce powerful, complex wines where the richness is balanced by acidity, just like nebbiolo. And like Barolo, good aglianico ages beautifully.

This is a Vivino exclusive, imported directly from the winery for our customers. Unfortunately, we weren't able to get our hands on a huge amount, so please make sure you don't miss out!
About the wine

Blu Onice is a serious wine. The Aglianico grapes from the 120-year-old vines have had the perfect growing conditions 600 meters above sea level and have benefited from 'Super' Mario Ercolino's undivided attention.

The wine has a deep and luscious aroma with cherry, marzipan, chocolate, truffle and herbal notes. Deeply concentrated and overflowing with sweet, ripe black fruit, this could be too much if it weren't for the balancing acidity that Aglianco is famous for. Structured and with extremely fine tannins and a very long finish, this is a feast for the senses! It should have a good decade ahead but is very attractive now - probably even more so with a few hours spent in a decanter.

About the winery

NATIV was founded in 2008 by Mario Ercolino, a quirky winemaker also known in Italy as 'Super Mario'.

The winery is located in the southern Italian region of Campania, northeast of Naples. Ercolino was previously head winemaker at the internationally renowned winery Feudi di San Gregorio, where for many years he refined the art of making great wines from Aglianico - he was the man behind their famous Taurasi wine.

Mario's goal is to rank among the top regional winemakers and to make authentic and characterful wine from the local grape varities.

About the vineyard

The vineyards surrounding the town of Paternopoli are mineral-rich, volcanic soils with more than 400 metres elevation. .

This very old area in the Irpinia originated around and on the slopes of Vesuvius. On these fertile hills grow 200 years old - non grafted - vines with native grapes such as Aglianico, Falanghina, Fiano and Greco.

Wines of this age are a rarity in Europe, as it means they managed to survive the phylloxera epidemic at the end of the 19th century, that laid waste to Europe's wine-making.

The Mediterranean climate, the volcanic soil, the influence of the nearby sea and the protection of mountains provide the ideal base for viticulture here.

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
