'Super' Mario Ercolino strikes again!

Making some of Southern Italy's greatest wines from its native grapes, 'Super' Mario's Nativ winery goes from strength to strength with every vintage. And the newly released 2012 Taurasi Rue 333 is ample proof of their success...

100% aglianico from 100 year old vines,  it’s a wonderfully rich wine, laden with black autumnal fruit, chocolate, spice and vanilla

Some call Taurasi wines the ‘Barolo of the south’… that’s quite some compliment and one that’s completely understandable when you take a sip of this spectacular 2012 Taurasi.

Just received directly from Italy, the 2012 Rue 333 has only been tasted so far by Luca Maroni, Italian wine guru, who awarded it a stunning 97 points - his best score yet for the wine...

Another fantastic Vivino exclusive in the UK, we expect this stunner to sell out quickly - make sure you don't miss it!

About the wine

An almost opaque, deep red/black in the glass, the Rue 333 displays the seductive side of Aglianico on the nose, full of aromas of dark berry fruit, chocolate, vanilla that are given greater complexity by herbal, spicy notes. Powerful, deeply concentrated and rich on the palate, the wine is full of ripe black fruit, cassis, and mocha all of which are balanced by a fresh acidity that keeps the wine from being over-intense. Incredibly soft and mouth-filling, this is extremely well made and finishes with great length, full of spice and liquorice. A beautiful Taurasi and one that will convert any red wine drinker to the charms of Aglianico!

Aglianico is without question a high-quality grape which is only just beginning to receive the recognition it rightly deserves.

Its natural home in the mountains of southern Italy is where it thrives and delivers the terrific, powerful, intense and long-lived wines that its fans adore. With time the wines develop great complexity with a full and spicy character that has given the wine its nickname of the 'Barolo of the South'

The Rue 333 comes from a plot of only 5 hectares planted with 100-year old vines. The grapes were harvested by hand and carefully transported to the cellar in small crates so that the harvest went intact into the fermenting container. The traditional fermentation of three weeks was followed by 24-month maturation in oak barrels and a further 12 months in bottle

About the winery & winemaker

Nativ is co-owned by highly respected local winemaker Mario Ercolino and his wife Roberta Pirone. Not quite a decade old, the estate’s focus is on producing top-quality wines from indigenous varieties.

Mario Ercolino is known as "Super Mario" in Italy. He is a wine maker who constantly amazes the international wine press with own way of doing things.

Originally the head winemaker at the well-known winery Feudi Di San Gregorio, in 2008 he started the Nativ winery and is now amongst the ranks of Italy's best winemakers.

'Super' Mario has always done things his own way, including harvesting his grapes later than usual, to get extra maturity and intensity for his special bottles. As a result, he has received many awards from, amongst others, Wine Spectator and leading Italian wine critic Luca Maroni.

About the vineyard

The estate has 15 hectares under vine located in Irpinia, near Paternopoli and Taurasi. Here the volcanic soils are famed for their fertility and rich mineral and ash content; the latter the spoils of Mount Vesuvius. It is in theses soils that aglianico thrives.

Some of the Nativ vineyards are on the high, south-east facing slopes where harvesting can take place as late as November. The grapes from here are notably higher in acidity and this brings vigour and freshness to the big, densely-flavoured wines.

For this wine, the aglianico grapes are taken from a 5 hectacre vineyard in Paternopoli at an altitude of 500 meters above sea level and where the vines are approximately 100 years old.

97 Points - Luca Maroni

93 points - Monica Larner (2011 vintage)
"Nativ's 2011 Taurasi is an opulent expression with dark garnet hues and beautiful intensity on the bouquet. Dark fruit, dried blackberry, plum and licorice segue seamlessly to Spanish cedar, dark vanilla bean and Indian spice. The wine wears its oak element in heavy layers, but it does so comfortably. This is a modern rendition of Taurasi with great tannic management (thanks to the oak aging and the warm vintage), soft fruit flavors and big power. The wine makes a positive impact on all the senses."

92 points - James Suckling (2011 vintage)
"Intense aromas of tar, blackberries and walnut. Medium body, firm and silky tannins and a delicious finish"

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
