La Rioja Alta are a huge Vivino favourite and undoubtedly one of the best wineries in Spain. Producing such legends as the 904 and 890 Gran Reserva and Vina Ardanza, they rarely, if ever, put a foot wrong.

So when they release a new wine, one that has been 20 years in the making, we sit up and pay attention!

The 2012 Martelo Reserva has been described as 'a breath of fresh air' in the traditional Rioja Alavesa region. Rioja Alta have spent those 20 years identifying the best plots within a single estate, Torre de Oña, ensuring that the correct grapes are grown in the optimum places and experimenting with the results until finally everything aligned and they had a wine they were proud to release.

And what a wine it is!

Dedicated to the concept of terroir in Rioja Alavesa, Martelo is poised and elegant and we love the wine’s breadth, texture and complexity. La Rioja Alta's consumate skill and dedication to quality are clearly on display in what is a pure, almost Burgundian expression of Rioja.

Thi is a unique wine for the region and we believe one that will go on to achieve a great name for itself.

£28.99 is just great value for a wine of this quality - and once word gets round we would be very suprised if later vintages did not see significant price rises!

About the wine

An extremely elegant Reserva with an enveloping bouquet of crushed red cherries and subtle spices with just a hint of lavender. On the palate, smooth textures and bright red berry fruits are balanced by a refined mineral character which leads to a long and refreshing finish. Beautifully defined and supple, and almost Burgundian in style, this wine will age well but would be perfect for drinking over the next five years.

After destemming and crushing, the grapes were put into vats for four days where they were left to ‘cold soak’ - a technique that highlights the grape’s individual characteristics. After alcoholic fermentation, the wine underwent malolactic fermentation in American and French barrels for two and half months. Finally, the wine was aged in oak barrels for two years.

About the winery

Torre de Oña has been part of the long-established and famed La Rioja Alta group since 1995. In purchasing the property, La Rioja Alta were seeking to make the best possible wine from the prestigious area where the vineyards are located. In essence, the aim was to make a ‘château’ wine - one which would transmit the unique qualities of the land.

The property has benefited from extensive investment in the last two decades and in 2016 the winery was overhauled and today includes an automated ‘tipping system’ for the small boxes in which are brought into the winery and a new pivoting de-stemmer to prevent the grapes from splitting. There’s even an optical sorter which digitally scans every berry, only letting through those grapes which meet the stringent quality requirements established by the winemaking team!

About the vineyard

For this, the very first Martelo, the winemaker, Julio Sáenz made his own personal pick from a selection of plots, choosing from the Martelo, Camino de la Iglesia, Altos de Vallecilla and Las Cuevas vineyards. The vines in these sites are over 60 years old and are planted across north-south facing slopes, with good exposure to both wind and sun, achieving a balanced ripeness.

97 Points - Guia Proensa

"...a good example of the fine wines of Laguardia, a character that is evident in the fruit and floral aromas, truffled notes with inky, mineral hints and a touch of truffles, constituting a broad, nuance-rich, highly elegant nose. Modern mouthfeel, with freshness and noble strength; balanced, fluid, tasty and expressive."

94 Points - Jamie Goode
“Refined and supple, this is a wine that combines sweet berry and cherry fruits with some complex spice, earth and cedar notes, as well as a hint of tar. There’s a lovely concentration of fruit and just a twist of vanilla from the American oak, but this stays nicely in the background. This is a modern Rioja, but it’s not about bold, sweet fruit: instead, there’s a level of elegance and refinement here and this wine will age into a beautiful mellow maturity over the course of the next decade.”

"Blackcurrant, blackberry, blueberry, medium + tannins, beguiling, taut, long aftertaste. It has potential to age"  4.5/5 Stars

"Sensation lovely in the mouth. Big bursts of red fruits but not too fruit forward. Generous depth. Super easy to drink with or without food. Great price for the quality."  4.5/5 Stars

"Intense garnet color, medium-high layer, clean and bright. Very intense on the nose, with important fruity notes, berries and blackberries, with balsamic touches in the background. The palate highlights its good structure, is balanced and with good acidity, elegant tannins and a long and pleasant aftertaste where the important fruity and balsamic notes stand out again. A fabulous Rioja"  4.5/5 Stars

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
