Big has never been so beautiful!

Full, rich and bursting with juicy, ripe fruit, the Actarus is one of the best Primitivos in Italy according to Italian wine critic Luca Maroni.

He even described the 2016 as the one of the best Italian reds of the year!

With a huge 98 points as well as a fantastic 4.2 Vivino score across all vintages, this is undoubtedly one of the best Primitivos being produced....

Made in the Manduria area of Puglia, where the southern Italian sun and the red soils make the region the best place in the world for growing this grape, the Actarus is a prime example of just how good wines from here can be!

About the wine

The strength and concentration of the Actarus Primitivo di Manduria can be guessed when you pour the wine: a deep-dark ruby red fills the glass, light violet reflections testify to its youth. The nose opens up a world full of dark cherries, blackberries and dried fruits, and a bit of tobacco, vanilla and cocoa make you impatient for the first sip. In the mouth, the wine then plays all its cards: incredibly concentrated, full-bodied and silky smooth, its ripe sweetness blends perfectly with a more mineral, savoury note, very fine tannins and a balancing acidity to create a wine that is powerful without being over-done. A Primitivo with impressive length, this is delicious drinking!

To make the wine, the grapes are hand-harvested before being de-stemmed and fermented for approximately 15 days at controlled temperatures. After malolactic fermentation, it mature for 12 months in small French oak barrels and  a further six months in bottle.

About the winery

Actarus is a project of the world-famous La Bollina winery. What began centuries ago as a noble winery in the Valpolicella area has grown into a large wine company with vineyards in Veneto, Piedmont and Montalcino.

Talented wine maker Andrea Bernardini gets La Bollina all the space to make top quality winesHe has selected the best vineyards in Italy's best wine-growing regions. Tavros is his most recent project. With this imposing Primitivo di Manduria he has made his dream come true: making a great primitivo in the best region of southern Italy.

According to Andrea, there are three important aspects to the success of his wines: good grapes, talent and a perfect combination of tradition with modern technology.

About the vineyard

The vineyards in Puglia stretch out over a long, narrow isthmus between the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. Summer heat, cold winters and the warm Sirocco wind make for extreme conditions. Yet, this is precisely the area where native grape varieties like the primitivo and the negroamaro feel the best at home.

The vineyards of Actarus are located around the town of Manduria, in the best region for the Primitivo grapeThe red soil provides vivid acids and subtle minerality in the wines, leaving them elegant in style. The refreshing sea wind provides the necessary cooling, which can slow the grapes slowly and give the wine elegance and refinement.

98 Points - Luca Maroni
"Shows a degree of density, softness and purity that is rarely achieved. Its unbelievable richness and balance is hard to beat. Chapeau."

"Great Value Primitivo. Fruity, lush and velvet like. Tinge of Italian earth and coco on the finish. Bellisimo"  4.5/5 Stars

"What a wonderful surprise...Mild but fragrant nose of berries and cinnamon with a hint of tropical fruit. Ridiculously balanced structure on the palate with less spiciness than one would get from, say, a Lodi Zin. Just a velvety soft and smooth finish with no hint of heat. This wine is delicious, I love it."  4.5/5 Stars

"One of the best Primitivo I have ever tasted with notes of plum, jam, licorice, vanilla, oak, cacao, blueberry. Structure so complex, long lasting"  4.5/5 Stars

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
