With maximum scores from two of Italy's most revered wine guides, Gambero Rosso and Veronelli, the celebrated Montiano from Falesco is yet more proof that Merlot and central Italy are a match made in heaven!

Only 2% of all Italian wines from circa 26,000 tasted are awarded the coveted maximum score from Gambero Rosso, and in 2017 the Montiano was one of just seven wines from Lazio to receive this honour.

Created by Riccardo & Renzo Cotarella, considered by many to be two of Italy's greatest winemakers, Montiano is a monumental 100% single vineyard Merlot.

Given the scores and reviews it receives, were the Montiano produced in Tuscany, it would be sold as a 'Super-Tuscan' and have a correspondingly large price tag - instead it's an incredibly good value £26.75 per bottle!

A terrific bargain with a 25% discount and the cheapest price we can find in the UK, this is an Italian stunner not to be missed...

About the wine

Pure, rich, velvety and concentrated, with all the characteristics of a top notch Right Bank Bordeaux, Montiano is one of Lazio's greatest and most innovative wines.

Montiano is a 100% single vineyard Merlot, with a wonderful, deep red color. The bouquet offers a wide and complex range of aromas, violets, blackberries, fresh roasted coffee, chocolate, vanilla, red fruit, light mineral and sweet spices. It is refined and concentrated.

The taste is typical of Merlot with huge richness and fullness. Round and soft, yet powerful, with an intense and long velvety finish. All qualities that are normally associated with top end wines from Bordeaux's Right Bank!

This is partly due to the extremely rigorous selection. Only Merlot grapes of maximum ripeness are used - the best of the best. The rich and intense grapes ferment in stainless steel tanks under controlled temperatures. The maceration takes place with the skins and is followed by 12 months maturation in French oak barrels.

About the winery

Two of Italy’s most acclaimed winemakers, brothers Riccardo and Renzo Cotarella, founded Falesco in 1979. Their philosophy is focused on balancing the uniqueness and tradition of native varietals with the versatility of international grapes. The result is a complete portfolio of wines that consumers and critics alike have recognized as exhibiting extreme value and quality.

Falesco winery is located in Umbria’s Montecchio municipality, near Orvieto in the southwestern area that borders the Lazio region. The region is bordered by the Tyrrhenian Sea on the west and Italy’s mountainous center to the east. The dry, perfectly drained, volcanic terroir offers ideal growing conditions for textured reds and crisp, refreshing whites.

About the vineyard

The Montiano parcel is located in Montefiascone, Lazio. The volcanic, mineral-rich soil of the Montiano vineyard and a rigorous hand selection of these grapes contribute to Montiano’s solid structure and concentration.

98 Points - Luca Maroni

Maximum Score - 3 Bicchieri! Extraordinary wine

92 Points - James Suckling
Fantastic merlot here with black-olive, blackberry and nutmeg undertones. Medium to full body, silky tannins"

"Ruby with traces of purple left. Viscous. Big embracing nose of raspberry and blackberry. Cranberry. Big mouth filling attack. Smooth at first, but a lot of tannin in the finish. Excellent structure. Stylish and elegant."   4/5 Stars

"Wide-open plum and coffee fruit. This is way more refined than previous Montianos, you can tell they are going for the top end of Italian Merlot. Killer"  4.5/5 Stars

"Flavours of herbs, aniline, blossoms, berries, fruit, prune. Nicely balanced taste with a fine acidity and present, still very lightly rough tannins but immensely covered by a lot of fruit. Power and elegance go greatly together. Superb wine."  4.5/5 Stars

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
