"A brilliant producer...dazzling wines that I can’t recommend highly enough.” Robert Parker

A truly special offer today - a wine that is a genuine contender for Italy's greatest white!

Schiopetto produce critically-acclaimed whites but the 2016 M takes it to a new level.

Named in honour of the estate's founder Mario, the M is produced from 64 year old vines grown in the south-facing slopes of the Capriva Cru in Collio and represents the pinnacle of Italian Friulano.

Only ever produced in the best vintages, in 2016 the M was awarded a huge 98 points from both James Suckling (the equal highest score he has ever awarded to an Italian white) and famous Italian critic Daniele Cernili, as well as a Vivino score of 4.3 from those lucky enough to have tasted it.

Just 113 cases were made to sate world-wide demand - and we have managed to secure a tenth of those for Vivino customers!

Once sold, we doubt you'll ever see this incredibly rare wine again, so make sure you don't miss out on this unique chance to own an Italian great!

About the wine

This iconic Friulano is supported with a modest 5% of riesling, both from the same vineyard, planted in 1954. Fermented and aged in stainless steel, the richness and complexity found in this wine is an expression of fruit and terroir. Aromatically very generous; the fruit is ripe and forward with notes of garden herbs and almonds and a amoky background. The palate is equally rich with white pear, candied lemon, gunflint and mineral flavours. Beautufully textured, rich yet poised, this is a perfectly balanced white with elegance, complexity and a finish that dances on the tongue for minutes. A truly excellent white wine!

The grapes in the 2016 “M” Friulano were all hand-picked. After careful selection of yeasts, the wine underwent a temperature controlled cold fermentation in stainless steel tanks, followed by nine months of aging on fine lees still in steel, before a delicate fining and bottling, where it rests an additional six months.

About the winery

Mario Schiopetto, son of Angela and Giorgio, was born in 1930 and grew up in the Fireman’s Hostelry which belonged to the family, experiencing in first person the life of a fireman and then that of a lorry driver. For years he accompanied and helped his father to select the wines for the Hostelry, eventually running it himself after the demise of his parents.

Entirely self-taught and with superb intuition for wine-making, Mario travelled to Germany and France to explore the wines made there. Eventually it was German technology aided by French finesse that enabled him to live his dream. Guided only by his personal taste and his love for wine, in 1965 he brought out his first “Tocai” and soon became known as the founding father of modern wine making in Friuli.

After his death in 2003, Mario's children, Maria Angela, Carlo and Giorgio,  took over the running of the winery.

About the vineyard

Everything started in 1970 in the vineyards around the Archbishop’s Palace at Capriva, ceded in rent to Mario by the church; vineyards which Mario completely renovated and which finally became his property in 1989.

The M is made from selected 64 year old vines grown in the south-facing slopes of the Capriva Cru in Collio

About the winemaker

“A brilliant producer, Schiopetto is the reference point for just how flavorful, perfumed, and compelling dry whites from Friuli can be. Mario Schiopetto continues to satiate the olfactory senses and palate with his extraordinary offerings. While not cheap, they are the most compelling tankfermented and aged dry whites made in northeastern Italy. Possessing abundant flavors that build incrementally in the mouth, they are dazzling wines that I can’t recommend highly enough.

98 Points - James Suckling
"
This is extremely smoky on the nose with flint and gunpowder. Dried apple, lemon and pear character. Full body, dense and powerful. Yet always lively and dancing in the palate. Crazy finish. One of Italy's top whites. Made from vines planted in 1954."

98 Points - Daniele Cernili
"
Blend of Friulano grapes from the most ancient vineyard of the estate with some Riesling Renano grapes. Stainless steel only. Bright greenish straw yellow color. On the nose compact with aromas of white peach, almond and some citrus. On the palate tense, intense, agile and yet full-bodied, savory, warm and extremely persistent. Great wine."

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
