If you love big, rich, soft Primitivo or Zinfandel then the Mammasantissima is a must try!

The name is a bit of a mouthful, but so is the wine! Full of lush, silky, dark fruit, it shouts of the Italian sunshine in which it was grown.

Another triumph from 'Super' Mario Ercolino, this time from his Puglian project Montemajor, this hedonistic Primitivo hails from Manduria, recognised as being the best region for this grape.

The top wine from the estate, it is made from 125 year old vines, whose small, concentrated grapes are picked at the optimum level of ripeness to ensure that the wine they produce is intense, soft and full of fruit.

98 points from Italian guru Luca Maroni and 4.2 stars from Vivino users confirm the quality here.

This is a wine of pure pleasure - and exclusive to Vivino in the UK!

About the wine

An intense ruby red, it's immediately obvious that this is a fruit bomb of a wine! Aromas of cherry liqueur, ripe dark berries, plums, cassis and cinnamon spice fill the glass as soon as the bottle is poured. Opulent, big-bodied, hedonistic, lush - the adjectives could go on and on. Soft, sweet, dark fruit is layered through the wine. Silky tannins and a good acidity ensure balance. Spicy, peppery and long on the finish, it's a wine that just shouts of its origins in the Italian sunshine!

Grapes come from some of the oldest vines in the area, with an average age of approx. 125 years. The harvest yield from these old vines is very modest, but produces grapes with a very concentrated flavor. Grapes are harvested by hand at the end of September, when the grapes are about to become overripe and have begun to raisin. Thereafter, a strict sorting and vinification takes place before the wine is first stored for 4 months in steel tanks and then for 18 months on new 225 liter French oak barrels.

About the winery

Montemajor is Mario's new project, which includes a range of extremely ambitiously made wines from two other southern Italy regions; Sicily and Puglia. The common denominator of all Mario Ercolino's wines is generosity and softness, due to the fact that only perfectly ripe grapes are used.

About the winemaker

Like Nativ, Montemajor is the brainchild of Mario Ercolino, a quirky winemaker also known in Italy as 'Super Mario'.

He is a winemaker who is something of a surprise to the international wine press mostly due to his quirky methods. Ercolino started as head winemaker at the famous winery Feudi di San Gregorio which achieved world fame . In 2008 he founded with some friends the widely acclaimed winery Nativ. And a few years later Montemajor followed.

Ercolino does things his own way - this includes picking grapes 7 to 10 days later than normal harvest, to get extra ripeness and intensity. He is a self-made success achieving multiple awards from among others, Wine Spectator and the leading Italian wine critic Luca Maroni.

Mario's goal is to rank among the top regional winemakers and to make authentic and characterful wines.

Other Offers

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
