One quick look at the scores and critics’ reviews and you’ll know why we are so excited to be offering this South African star to you today for £45.95 – that’s 16% off the UK RRP.

Master of Wine, Greg Sherwood awards MR de Compostella a terrific 98 points and Tim Atkin gave it 96 points...and they are just the best in a long line of excellent reviews.

These scores are nothing new for this wine, having captured the attention of wine critics everywhere when it first burst on to the scene eleven years ago. The 2009 vintage was even voted as one of the most memorable wines in the world by Neal Martin.

MR de Compostella is a Bordeaux blend from two of South Africa's most exciting winemakers, Mzokhona Mvemve and Bruwer Raats - who aim to take the 5 traditional Bordeaux varieties and make a magnificent whole!

The palate is rich and complex with mineral, black berry fruit and dark chocolate. Soft, concentrated and supremely elegant, it is a South African stand-out.

In reviews of the vintage, many felt that the 2015 vintage is the best yet for this great wine. We think it would put many of Bordeaux's top names to shame.

But we'll leave the final words to one enthusiastic Vivino member!

“Stunning, stunning, stunning"

About the wine

The name, “De Compostella” means the 'compilation of the stars' and refers to the winemakers’ aim to make a fine wine from five individual varieties.

A deep, dark intense ruby colour, the aromas are of blackcurrant and black cherry with hints of violet, cedar and cinnamon. The palate is rich and complex with mineral, black berry fruit and dark chocolate. Seamlessly integrated and superbly elegant, this is a wine with a lovely flavour profile and a very polished, soft finish. None of the five grape varieties dominate and each complement the others to ensure that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. A stunner of a South African and quite probably one of the best reds being produced in the country today.

Each variety is vinified in oak separately and then tasted. Only the wines that scored over 90 points were considered for the final blend. The percentage components of the blend were determined by the scores achieved in the blind tasting. Once blended the wine is aged for 12 months in French oak, one third of which was new. The remaining barrels were second and third fill.

About the winery

Raats Family Wines was declared Platter’s “Winery of the Year” in the 2018 guide.

Bruwer Raats is one of South Africa’s most exciting winemakers. For the MR de Compostella wine he teams up with another shining light in the South African wine scene, Mzokhona Mvemve.

A great deal of effort has gone into sourcing specific soil types and old low-yielding vineyards located in the Stellenbosch, Paarl, Durbanville Hills and the Paardeberg area. All grapes are handpicked and the wines are made with Bruwer's extensive knowledge and attention to detail. The result is a truly distinctive showcase for South African wine and soil.

About the vineyard

Produced from vineyards with an average age of 35 years. Vines are grown in both decomposed granite and Table Mountain sandstone soils and are a combination of trellised and bush vines, irrigated as well as dry land. Yield approximately 7 – 8 tons per hectare.

"
I like to think I have an intimate knowledge of this wine. So when Bruwer did a pre-release vertical tasting in London earlier this year, we got to see the 2015 in all its noble splendour. I received a few raised eye brows for scoring this wine 98 points, but my argument was simple… When tasted along side critically acclaimed MR vintages that scored 95 or 96 points internationally, the 2015 was considered 15% to 20% better. So I had no hesitation in scoring this wine 98 points and declaring it my South African Red Wine of the Year 2017."

"This is the eleventh vintage of this outstanding Bordeaux style blend and it may well be the best yet. Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon based, with some Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec completing the line up, it’s a floral, scented, finely crafted delight, showing stylish oak, filigree tannins and layers of mocha, graphite, green herbs and dark, refreshing fruit."

"
Perhaps the best vintage of Compostella to date.  It showcases a beautiful elegance and herbal edge in waves of cigar tobacco and blackcurrant leaf, with a grounded fruit core of blackberry, plum and cassis. Additional notes of leather and German chocolate cake lend depth and intrigue, while the finish exhibits a masterful evolution between all these components with each sip. Well-structured and superbly balanced, it boasts gripping tannins and ample acidity to frame the ripe fruit. A beauty that should mature masterfully,"

95 points & 5 Stars - Hennie Coetzee
"Benchmark Cape Bordeaux blend led by cab franc (40%), the other 4 varieties & understated oak (just 30% new) in support. Black fruit, cassis, herbs & cherries, 2015 is a delicious paradox: intense yet elegant; dense yet ethereal, classically conceived yet unmistakably SA."

"Cab Franc stealing the show for the 2015 vintage, with the other Bordeaux varieties following suit. Absolutely superlative! Stunning, stunning, stunning!5/5 Stars

"The icon. The showstopper. This was the wine of the evening. ...Ripe dark berries shine on the body - mulberries and cranberries come through. It is elegant, with brilliant acidity. It is everything I love about Bordeaux blends - the complexity, the fullness. Amazing. "  5/5 Stars

"Bordeaux-styled blend at its best! Graphite, red currants and black berries dominate the intensely powerful nose, with subtle oak aromas. Incredibly poised structure, with beautifully controlled fruit integration. Complex, intense and layered, ending in a cascade of black currants and blue berries. A true SA icon!"  5/5 Stars

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
