"Some of the world’s most arresting wines" Matthew Jukes

Vidal may not be a new name in New Zealand wine-making circles (they've been making wine here since 1898), but it is certainly one of the best!

From their vineyards in Hawkes Bay, they have been producing some of New Zealand's best wines, particularly using Syrah and Chardonnay, and their flagship Legacy wines are world-class.

The Legacy Syrah is produced from only the best grapes in Vidal's best vineyards situated in the Gimblett Gravels region, widely considered to be the home of the best Syrah grown in New Zealand. Bold, ripe, concentrated, with great richness and layer upon layer of flavour, the Legacy Syrah deserves all the praise that has been heaped upoin it by critics and drinkers alike.

The 2013 vintage was generally held to have been the best in Hawkes Bay within living memory - so when 2014 came along, new superlatives were needed!

The 2014 Legacy Syrah encapsulates all that was best about the vintage - perfect ripeness, concentration and mature, fine tannins - a brilliant wine that is possibly one of the best New Zealand has produced!

We'd love to sneak this in to a blind tasting of top Hermitage from the Northern Rhone - we'd be quietly confident that it would put many of those exalted wines to shame - both in terms of quality and price.

At £31.50 per bottle, this is jaw-droppingly good value for one of the greatest Syrahs to have been made in New Zealand!

About the wine

This enticingly fragrant Syrah from the Gimblett Gravels Winegowing District shows intense aromatics of dark rose, plum, herb garden and underlying spice. The rich and concentrated palate of dark cherry and plum combines with a savoury complexity. Elegantly balanced, and finely textured with chalky tannins this wine has a very long finish. Distinct and ageworthy, it is just starting to hit its drinking window - but would benefit from some time in a decanter. There's no rush though, as this should age elegantly for the next 10-15 years.

2014 was an outstanding Hawkes Bay vintage and joins 2013 as one of the truly great vintages of all time. Warm, dry and settled conditions prevailed throughout the season allowing the picking decision to be based purely on flavour and balance. Naturally low yielding vines combined with early season “green harvesting” and meticulous canopy management throughout the season have rewarded us with perfect ripeness, flavour development, concentration and tannin maturity.

To make the Legacy Syrah, fruit was 100% destemmed and then crushed. The cap was managed by a combination of hand plunging and pumping over. Fermentation took place in open top fermenters at a temperature of 30-34° C, spending 20-28 days on its skins. The wine was matured for 20 months in French barrique (50% new).

About the winery

In 1898 Anthony Joseph Vidal arrived in New Zealand and was one of the first winemakers to appreciate the natural potential of Hawkes Bay. In 1905 he purchased a Hawkes Bay racing stable yard and set about converting it into a cellar and winery. It was from there he became one of New Zealand’s early wine innovators. His commitment to crafting classic, elegant wines remains an inspiration to this day.

Family owned until the 1970’s, Vidal was purchased in 1976 by George Fistonich who has consistently built upon Vidal’s reputation as a quality wine producer ever since. Vidal Estate is also home to New Zealand’s original winery restaurant opening in 1979- a true epicurean experience.

The Vidal winemaking philosophy focuses on minimal intervention from vineyard site to bottle. The result is a collection of award winning and highly acclaimed wines which are true to their roots and exhibit the perfect combination of balance, concentration and complexity.

About the vineyard

Fruit for this wine was grown entirely in Vidal's Omahu and Twyford Gravels vineyards in the heart of the premium Gimblett Gravels winegrowing district, where the soil is made up of relatively recent alluvial deposits of gravel with varying degrees of silt and sand.

These naturally free-draining, low vigour and “lean” sites combined with detailed vineyard knowledge and the ideal growing season of 2014 has produced a world-class wine that shows intensity, texture and depth of flavour.

"
A wine of total seduction, the gloriously perfumed bouquet shows dark plum, blueberry, floral and game with nuances of cedar and black pepper. The palate is powerful and sumptuous, and delivers waves of delectable fruit flavours, enhanced by velvety texture and loads of supple tannins. Compelling and formidable, while remaining pure and true to its origin. From their Ohau Gravels and Twyford Gravels vineyards in the Gimblett Gravels district."

"
Dense and powerful Syrah with impressively rich flavours of chocolate, plum/dark berry, liquorice, cracked black pepper and spicy oak. I rate it slightly ahead of the more structured and highly celebrated wine from the 2013 vintage and I believe it will cellar at least as well despite being more accessible now."

"Very dark, deep, black-hued purple-red colour, youthful in appearance. The nose is full and voluminous with firmly concentrated and deep aromas of ripe blackberry fruit melded with iron-earth and black mineral notes. Black and violet florals unfold, with spice and liquorice elements, black plums and a suggestion of funky reductive mineral complexity. Full-bodied and powerfully presented on the palate, this is solidly concentrated, near-sturdy, but retaining style. The fruit is particularly dense and concentrated, lending remarkable body, weight and presence. The flavours of well-ripened black berried fruits, iron-earth, plums and liquorice are complexed by spice nuances, and show with richness, succulence and lusciousness. The fruit sweetness is balanced by very fine-grained, powdery tannins with considerable extract. The palate caries to a very long, lingering finish."

"
A step in the direction of greater fruit presence and greater depth. The richness of blackberry and dark plum fruit is impressive in terms of aromas and palate presence. The oak is stepped up and melds seamlessly into the spicy, dense fruit. Tannins run straight below bringing reliable structure and length. Drink now and for some years to come."

"Pure clean dark blue and black fruits. Fresh acidity and good weight and density. One for the cellar this really is a beautiful expression of pure fruit. Serious4.5/5 Stars

"Another fantastic vintage - velvety subtle tannins, mud/earth and red fruit. Should develop well with wine maker recommending drinking 2018-2032" 4.5/5 Stars

"Deep dense coloir. Lifted black doris plum nose with a distinctivetouch of aniseed, cinnamon and cooking spices on the nose which provides a lot of interest. There is a firm structure that is underoinned by rich, juicy fruit. This represents fantastic value for money and continues the reputation of this rapidly growing cult wine"  4.5/5 Stars

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
