For the sixth consecutive year, Eremo San Quirico from Nativ has scored an incredible 99 points from Luca Maroni who describes it as "one of the best red wines of all times..."

With great scores from the critics, 4.2 out of 5 stars from over 7000 fellow Vivino tasters (for all vintages) and a stunning price of just £16.99 - the lowest in the UK - this must be one of Italy's best deals!

The wine is made from grapes from 200 year old vines, and the 2013 is quite possibly the best ever; more richness, more complexity, better structure...

Aglianico is an Italian indigenous grape variety - renowned for powerful and intense wines. Over time, it develops greater complexity with a rich and spicy character.

About the wine

The Nativ Eremo San Quirico Aglianico 2013 is deep dark red with purple tints and concentrated sultry aromas of ripe cherries and plums. The subtle notes of sweet spices like cloves, licorice and chocolate are pleasant and creamy in the mouth. The intense flavour of rich, ripe black fruit frames a sweet, spicy and velvety finish. The fresh acidity and fine-grained tannins give this wine an almost endless life .

This impressive wine is made from the indigenous aglianico grape. The grapes are harvested by hand in early November. After a fermentation of about 20 days in stainless steel tanks matured wine for a period of 12 months in new French oak . This is aglianico in its purest form. Along with the Nebbiolo and Sangiovese grape it is one of the noble grapes of Italy.

About the vineyard

The vineyards surrounding the town of Paternopoli are mineral-rich, volcanic soils with more than 400 metres elevation. This very old area in the Irpinia originated around and on the slopes of Vesuvius. On these fertile hills grow 200 years old - not grafted - vines with native grapes such as Aglianico, Falanghina, Fiano and Greco. Wines of this age are a rarity in Europe. One of the unique features of these vines is that they have survived the phylloxera epidemic (at the end of the 19th century).

The Mediterranean climate, the volcanic soil, the influence of the nearby sea and the protection of mountains provide the ideal base for viticulture.

About the winemaker

NATIV was founded in 2008 by Mario Ercolino, a quirky winemaker also known in Italy as 'Super Mario'. The winery is located in the southern Italian region of Campania, northeast of Naples. Ercolino, who was previously head winemaker at the internationally renowned winery Feudi di San Gregorio , looks after a 12 hectare estate with his wife. Mario's goal is to rank among the top regional winemakers and to make authentic and characterful wines.

99 Points -  Luca Maroni
"99 points. You can assess the wine’s quality just by looking at the colour; not an atom of light can penetrate it. On the palate it is all density and ripeness. This is a culmination of exceptional wine growing and brilliant vinification. One of the best red wines of all times and an example of the Aglianico grape’s potential when it reaches its peak of maximum clarity."

94 Points - James Suckling (2012 vintage)
"A red with smoke, plums and hints of balsamic character. Full body, ultra-soft tannins and a round and caressing finish. A gorgeous, luscious and soft-textured red. Drink now."

91 Points - Wine Spectator
"This juicy red offers modern-style accents of melted licorice and mocha to the ripe boysenberry coulis and oak spice flavors, but the wild herb and tarry mineral underpinning is classic, old-school Aglianico. Creamy and balanced, with a rich and lingering finish.

"A very good wine. Dark deep purplish red. Plum, dark berries, coffee and some chocolate on the nose. A very harmonic and well structured wine with fine tannins and a long finish. 99 points from Luca Maroni are justified."  5/5 Stars

"Really delicious, intense, deep red wine. Raisins and spice on the palate, plums and stewed fruit on the nose. Wonderful stuff" 4/5 Stars

"Excellent wine which is worthy of praise. This wine should be a staple in the wine cellar of all Aglianico lovers."  4.5/5 Stars

Other Offers

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
