"...undeniably the single greatest red Portuguese wine I have ever tasted" Robert Parker (on tasting the first vintage)

If you love sublime, rich, velvety reds, then you’ll want to try this - even if you’ve never tasted a Portuguese Red from the Douro before.

A best seller with Vivino customers, Pinteivera is created by Michel Chapoutier, wine-making genius and this is his latest vintage!

Not content with making multiple 100 point wines in the Northern Rhone, he has begun to apply his skills anywhere he believes the terroir is perfect for making world-class wines.

Chapoutier has a nose for great, forgotten vineyards, and the wines he coaxes from these sites never fail to astound. This is your archetypal ‘iron fist in a velvet glove’ red. It’s made entirely from Portugal’s great red variety (and the cornerstone of most Ports) the beautifully fragrant, deeply coloured Touriga Nacional.

Decanter recently named the 2012 as one of the best Portuguese buys under £25, the 2013 is drinking beautifully right now and at just £17.95 is great value!

About the wine

Powerfully aromatic, with an abundance of ripe, dark fruit, new leather and figs, along with some very Rhone-like wild thyme, rosemary and star anise notes. Big and full on the palate with an impressively deep, velvety structure. There's flesh, weight and depth, all rounded off by an incredibly long finish. The dark fruit comes through again, backed by notes of dark chocolate and figs. This is rich, warming, opulent and velvety but still with a lovely freshness and great balance.

This is only Chapoutier’s fifth vintage from the Douro, but there’s no question that he has cracked it! But then, he makes great wines wherever he goes, so that’s hardly a surprise. The Douro Valley is now one of the world's most exciting regions for dry red wines - many of which come with eye-watering price tags. So when you find an affordable, highly-rated bottle from one of the worlds greatest wine makers, it's got to be worth trying!

Touriga Nacional is a dark-skinned grape variety that makes Portugal’s finest red wines. Extensively planted in the Portugal's northern Dao and Douro wine regions, the variety is a key ingredient in both dry red wines and the fortified wines of Oporto (Port). In many ways, Touriga Nacional is Portugal's answer to France's Cabernet Sauvignon. Both varieties display bold, dark-fruit flavours, often with hints of spice, leather and violet. Cabernet lovers will find plenty to enjoy here.

About the vineyard

The tiny, rugged Esteivera vineyard takes its name from the native shrub "Esteva" ("rock rose" in English), which grows only on the best shale soils, and it’s presence around the edges of the rows of ancient vines (up to 100 years old) is considered a sign of great potential.

The climate and exposure are also ideal - it is sheltered from extremes of temperature and rainfall. When Michel was shown it by a local grower, he knew at once that this was the perfect Douro vineyard that he had been looking for - and Pinteivera is the expression of that perfection! However, vines this ancient only tield tiny amounts of grapes and only 1000 cases were made.

About the winemaker

Michel Chapoutier is the sort of man about which books could be written!  Since taking control of the family firm in 1990 (and immediately sacking family members working there), he has revolutionised the production of wine from his sites, not only in the Rhône, but now his plantings stretch from the Douro, to Italy and Alsace.

He is a consummate professional when it comes to his trade, and is a firm believer in letting the terroir speak: “I do not try to create the perfect wine, but to take snapshots of the terroir”.  It just so happens that in doing so, he does create near perfection! He is beyond a doubt one of France's greatest winemakers

"...the world’s leading, irreverent genius in winemaking and winemaking philosophy" Robert Parker

90 points - Decanter (2012 vintage)
"Intense, generous aromas and flavours of herbal, spice and violet-tinged blackberry and dark cherry fruit, boasting well integrated tannins and alcohol. Ageing gracefully and with plenty left to give."

94 points - Robert Parker (2009 vintage)
"Michel Chapoutier has entered the Portuguese wine arena, producing an extraordinary wine from a 5-hectare parcel in the Douro. Undeniably the single greatest red Portuguese wine I have ever tasted."

91 points - Wine Enthusiast (2011 vintage)
From Rhône producer, M. Chapoutier, this is a new venture. The style is elegant while also powerful and complex. It brings out strong minerality, black currant fruit and tense acidity, resulting in a wine for ageing."

"Dark, explosive, slowly building very nicely"  4/5 Stars

"Intense aroma, black berries. Sweet plum, spices. Tastes great, with a fresh acidity, soft with a slight minerality. Long"  4/5 Stars

"A successful Duoro; bursting with red fruit. A very accomplished achievement"  4/5 Stars

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
