Proper left bank Bordeaux at a decent price can be incredibly difficult to find. So we were over the moon when we tasted this delicious, archetypal claret from Château Bernadotte!

Situted near some of the great estates of Pauillac and previously owned by Pichon Lalande, this is a great buy and we’re delighted to be able to offer it for just £15.75 per bottle.

It’s a wine that’s proud of its Haut-Médoc pedigree. The blackcurrant cabernet sauvignon fruit is immediately identifiable, as is the wine’s year-long élevage in oak barrels; the scents of spice and leather your clue.

Made with the help of consultant winemaker, Hubert de Boüard (owner of Château Angélus), this is a delicious wine that is very competitively priced, given its quality. The property has been under new ownership since the 2013 vintage and the focus is very much on supporting the team in their goal to see the estate reach its full potential.

They’re off to a cracking start and we urge you to try it!

About the wine

The wine has a pronounced blackcurrant character that comes from the cabernet, whilst the merlot brings supple juiciness. The tannins aren’t shy but they’re ripe and well integrated and the overwhelming feeling in the mouth is of very nicely textured, balanced wine.

Made with the help of consultant winemaker, Hubert de Boüard - owner of the fabled Château Angélus - this Bernadotte is a claret classic. A blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and a splash of petit verdot, the grapes undergo a cold pre-fermentation maceration prior to traditional fermentation. The ageing takes place in oak barrels, only a third of which is new.

The 2014 vintage is the second wine since the King Power Group took over the reins and if this is the sign of things to come, we wine drinkers have much to look forward to.

About the winery

The Bernadotte château is a striking property that was built in 1860. In recent decades it has been renovated and restored by Mister Ecklund (a Swedish manufacturer) and Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, the latter of whom invested heavily in every aspect of the winery. It was at this time that the Bernadotte wines began to show their class and potential. In December 2012, King Power Group HK took on the estate and they have continued the work of recent owners in both the winery and vineyard and are determined to support the château in achieving the rank it deserves.

About the vineyard

The Bernadotte vineyards are in Saint-Sauveur, to the north of Saint-Estèphe where the soils are a mix of sandy gravel and clay-limestone. The vines are, on average, thirty years old and are planted at a density of 10,000 vines per hectare; just as you would find in the neighbouring Grands Cru Classés vineyards.

"
The 2014 Bernadotte is dense, plush and inviting. Succulent red stone fruit, pomegranate and expressive floral notes are all fused together in this deep, pliant Haut-Médoc. The 2014 is best cellared for another year or two, as the tannins are a bit firm today and the oak needs to fully integrate. Even so, the 2014 is gorgeous."

"
The great dominance of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend has given this wine both a fine structure and crisp swathes of black-currant fruit. It is a firm wine at this stage, although the fine fruitiness will become an important part of the taste. The estate is named after one of Napoleon's generals who became King of Sweden."

“Attractive walnut and cassis character married to some spicy oak, and there’s a balance of dry tannins, fresh acidity and a sleek body that’s really classic and harmonious.”

"The vineyard is very close to Pauillac class growth Chateaux and has similar soil. Mature dark fruits, cedar, leathery, with some subtle fruits. This medium-bodied, cherries on the palate, soft tannins, and good acidity. Great value for money old chateaux Haut-Medoc."  4/5 Stars

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
