Château Fortia is one of the most symbolic wines of Châteauneuf du Pape.

One of the oldest estates, where vines have been cultivated since the seventeenth century, it was also the home of Baron Pierre Leroy, the man responsible for the appellation d'origine contrôlée system.

A classic blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre, the Châteauneuf-du-Pape Tradition is everything you would expect from a great Châteauneuf - silky concentration, rich warming spice and the earthy, herbal notes that characterise the Southern Rhône.

£25.15 is a superb price for a wine of this quality and given the price rises the area has seen in recent years, it represents excellent value

Considering its history, the small production (just 3500 odd cases are made every year) and the excellence of its wine, Fortia flies somewhat under the radar and because of this the wines have retained great value for money.

Drinking perfectly now, this is quintessential Châteauneuf!

About the wine

This is classic Châteauneuf on the nose - sweet cherry, redcurrant and blackberry fruit mingles with smoky and peppery spice notes. This sweet, pure fruit continues onto the soft, silken palate that has an added touch of liquorice. Fresh and spicy with a hint of garrigue on the long finish, it is an elegant and supremely enjoyable wine. Drinking very well now and very difficult to resist, it should nonetheless age well for the next 5-6 years.

To make this Châteauneuf rigorous sorting take place after picking before the grapes are destalked. Fermentation takes place in temperature controlled tanks with a long maceration lasting about 21 days. Malolactic fermentation then takes place in large oak barrels. After rackin,g the wine is aged for 12 to 18 months in oak casks.

About the winery

Château Fortia is a symbolic estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, both for its location and its roots that are closely linked to that of its appellation. One of the oldest estates, dating back to its beginnings as a farm in 1763, Fortia itself took shape as a working winery in the early part of the nineteenth century, when it also took its name from the estate's founder, the Marquis de Fortia.

In 1929 due to the efforts of then owner, Baron Pierre Leroy, Chateauneuf du Pape became the first appellation with a set of winemaking regulations - the beginnings of the
appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) system.. Today his descendants still continue the proud family tradition and have named this wine in his honour.

Pierre Pastre is now the winemaker and siince his arrival on the estate several years ago, he has strived to make improvements in the vineyards, including the replanting of vines on specific plots of land, to best suit the grape variety.

About the vineyard

Located close to Châteauneuf du Pape itself, the 30 hectare vineyard is planted to grapes to produce both red and white wine. 2.5 hectares are devoted for white, while the remaining 27.5 hectares are used for the production of red wine. They have a terroir of sand, clay, limestone and large rocks in their soil.

This domain has one of the best terroirs in Châteauneuf-du-Pape with its abundance of rounded quartzite stones from the Villafranchian period. These stones absorb heat during the day then radiate it at night, promoting full grape maturity.

"
This shows lovely purity, with a beam of red currant and raspberry confiture running from start to finish, picking up pretty notes of violet, dried star anise and mulled blood orange along the way. The sleek finish features a solid iron underpinning."

"
Brilliant ruby. Smoke-accented raspberry, cherry and potpourri aromas are sharpened by a peppery nuance. Fleshy, broad and seamless, offering juicy red fruit flavors and a hint of candied lavender. Shows very good depth and focus on the nervy, youthfully tannic and persistent finish, with a hint of garrigue coming on late."

"
Mid purple. Heady and very ripe and attention-grabbing on the nose. Racy and transparent. Very much more like a vivacious regular Châteauneuf than many of these. Not dense but it stands out from the crowd. Essence of strawberry?"

"Classic, well balanced Chateauneuf-du-Pape." 4.0/5 Stars

"Medium concentrated ruby red. Medium plus concentration of fruit, youthful raspberry, strawberry. Lots of fruit for an old world Grenache. Got some valley floor and mushroom too. Very nice." 4.0/5 Stars

"Soft, focused and yet surprisingly gentle. Hints of kirsch cherries, plums, mushrooms and loamy soil. Fresh, spicy and yet somehow also sweetly smoky, the well integrated tannins provide wonderful structure alongside delicately muted aromatics." 4.5/5 Stars

"For the price of this Châteauneuf du Pape it's a steal!" 5/5 Stars

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING
