One of the leading Cru Bourgeois, this splendid Margaux from the outstanding 2015 vintage makes you realise exactly why Bordeaux is so sought after.

Given the top score by Robert Parker's Wine Advocate in a tasting of 145 Cru Bourgeois from the 2015 vintage, this La Tour de Mons is absolutely top-notch Bordeaux with supple, generous fruit (a hallmark of the vintage) and the elegant balance that typifies Margaux.

Located just north of the Château Margaux, La Tour de Mons has a history dating back to the 13th century and a single block of vines, planted on perfect left-bank terroir (gravel and clay) not that far from the Garonne - like all the best left-bank wines.

Somehow the Château missed being included in the 1855 Classification, despite fetching higher prices than the likes of Pontet-Canet or Lynch-Bages in the mid-18th century. Good news for consumers as it means the prices are still very reasonable indeed!

Just £22.49, this is an excellent price for one of the wines of the vintage. A truly affordable, great Bordeaux!

About the wine

Merlot dominates the blend (56%) with cabernet sauvignon most of the rest and a splash of petit verdot. The wine’s colour is intense and the aromas wonderfully expressive with classic Medoc notes of cassis, cedar and spice. The palate is rich and refined with deep, concentrated, ripe fruit, neatly integrated tannins and a delicious freshness. Elegant and balanced, this is Margaux as it should be. Very approachable already (but give it some time in a decanter), this has the fruit, structure and balance to age well for a decade and longer.

After hand-picking and careful sorting of the grapes in the winery, batches are placed in separate stainless steel tanks depending on their origin. Plot selection and traceability is thus meticulous. Low temperature fermentation over an extended period allows soft extraction. Each batch is then drawn off into barrels. Press wine is carefully selected and then blended. The wine will then age for 12 months in French oak barrels, 40% of which are new each year.

About the winery

The origin of the château dates back to the 13th century. Amongst its illustrious owners was Pierre de Mons, who acquired the property in 1623 and gave it his name. The estate stayed in his family until the end of the 20th century.

Since the 1990s, the new owners (French bank, Crédit Agricole, owners of a number of Bordeaux estates) have implemented a major renovation programme which has included the building of a new winery with an air-conditioned storage cellar, a more environmentally sustainable approach in the vineyard and an up-to-date drainage programme.

About the vineyard

The Château owns 48 hectares of vineyards in the Margaux appellation, famed for its soils of Garonne gravel and clay-limestone. It is a single block vineyard, situated to the north of the appellation, beside the river Garonne - where the best left-bank terroir is found.

The vines are around 30 years old, the yields are between 45 and 50 hectolitres per hectare and the vines are split between 56% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 6% Petit Verdot.

"
It has an impressive and voluminous bouquet with extrovert but not overpowering blackberry and raspberry scents complemented by crushed rose petals and crushed stone. There is fine oak integration here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, very harmonious with freshness from start to finish. You just want to take another sip as soon as possible—job done. Bravo! "

"
This is a fruity, juicy wine, generous in texture and balanced in acidity. The tannins are caught up and lost in this welter of fruit.".

"This Margaux shows a medium plus nose that's quite attractive and fragrant-forest fruits , oak and spices. Full bodied, with a good backbone and acidity ; it has all the signs of a very good year which will age greatly. It shows notes of dark fruits( plums, cherries, black currant) red fruits(cherries, plums) oak(cedar) , clove and vanilla"  4/5 Stars

"I'm a wine novice but this was a beautifully smooth wine with great fruit aroma. On the hunt for more"  4/5 Stars

"...very deep red with a nose of black and blue fruits and sweet spice. The palate shows plum and ripe blackberry flavors with cedar and licorice, well balanced drinking nicely. Smooth tannins give way to a lingering finish"  4/5 Stars

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
