"There can be no doubt that the son Jean-Louis, and his papa Gerard Chave, are among this planet's greatest winemakers" Robert Parker, The Worlds's Greatest Wine Estates

High praise indeed!

Arguably the Rhône's greatest winemaker and as Mr Parker points out, up there with the best on the planet, Jean-Louis Chave has made multiple, legendary 100 point wines that sell for hundreds of pounds per bottle.

And yet, not content with just making brilliant wines at the top end of the market, Jean-Louis also makes wines like this fantastic Côtes du Rhône Mon Coeur, using all his commitment and skill to make the best wine that he possibly can.

A chance to taste a little of the Chave magic at an everyday price!

Just landed in the UK from France and yet to be tasted by the ciritics, 2016 was a brilliant year for the southern Rhône, surpassing even the great 2015.

Jean-Louis has exploited it to the full, making a deep, intense red that tastes like a wine three times the price or more...

This is a fantastic chance to see why Chave are so highly rated - don't miss out!

About the wine

When Jean-Louis Chave set about making his négociant wines he was clear that they were not to be seen as ‘second bottlings’ of the estate wines but rather a midway point between excessively commercial wines and those at the quirkier end of the scale.

There would be no compromise in quality but the wines would offer a broader group of wine lovers the opportunity to enjoy the Chave experience, being offered at a considerably lower price tag than the estate’s famous Hermitage wines.

A classic blend of grenache, syrah and mourvèdre, the 2016 Mon Coeur is like the 2015 but with everything turned up a few notches. On the nose deep, dark fruit joins with herbal garrigue notes and a touch of peppery spice that adds to the complexity. Rich, intense and smoothly textured on the palate, it has a stunning core of ripe dark fruit allied to more spice and a savoury minerality. Velvety, supple and very long on the finish, this is astonishing quality for the price. Hard not to open right away, it will cellar nicely for a few years if you can keep your hands off it...

To make the Mon Coeur, small parcels of de-stemmed grapes are harvested at perfect maturity and undergo a 3 week vinification in stainless steel vats. The wine is then aged in 4-6 year old 228 and 600-litre oak casks for 12-15 months before fining, filtration and finally bottling.

About the winery

In his book, “The New France”, the wine writer Andrew Jefford says of Chave, The Chave line, which stretches back astonishingly to 1481, could make a fair claim to be France’s winemaking royal family: in no other of France’s great terroirs is the largest individual landholder so deeply rooted in time and place, so supremely competent, and so modest a custodian of the insights and craftsmanship of the past”Praise indeed and you’ll find it echoed in the review of every wine critic and writer across the globe. The wines of Domaine Jean-Louis Chave are amongst the world’s very finest.

Motivated by a desire to bring their wines to an audience with pockets not deep enough for their Hermitage wines, the Chave family have developed a négociant range where the wines are made from a selection of their own grapes and some bought in from other producers. Happily, the attention to detail and drive for quality is just as it is for the domaine’s wines at over ten times the price and the results are hugely impressive for this level.

About the vineyard

Jean Louis sources the fruit for the Mon Coeur from some of the best villages in the Côtes du Rhône AOC, chosen for their mature vines, low yields and exceptional quailty of fruit. A large part is sourced from Vinsobres, chosen for its altitude, its high proportion of Syrah and its relatively northern location; with the other key areas Cairanne, Séguret and Valréas.

91 points - Jeb Dunnock (2015 vintage)
"...a beauty that certainly delivers the goods. Ripe black cherry and blackberry fruits, loads of garrigue and peppery spice, and a hints of saddle leather all flow to a medium to full-bodied, textured, balanced red"

90 Points - Matt Walls, mattwalls.co.uk
"45% Grenache, 40% Syrah, 15% Mourvèdre mostly from the Southern Rhône villages of Vinsobres, Rasteau and Cairanne. Blackberry, loganberry and the faintest whiff of bonfire, all very enticing. It’s the palate that really makes an impression though, this is a remarkably well tailored and sophisticated Côtes-du-Rhône – one of the finest I’ve tasted labelled under this modest appellation. Lush, but well balanced, with a richly textured mouthfeel and juicy berry acidity...essential mid-week drinking"

90 Points - Wine Spectator (2015 vintage)
"This unfurls a pure beam of crushed plum and black cherry fruit, inlaid gently with singed bay leaf, pepper and anise notes. A light smoky edge runs through the finish."

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
