Situated in the heart of the Crozes-Hermitage appellation, Domaine de la Ville Rouge are quietly going about making a name for themselves.

Made from 35 year old vines in a single vineyard, this classy, silky Terre d'Eclat is an absolute delight to drink now (although it will age beautifully as well) and at just £17.95 per bottle is simply stunning value for some of the best Syrah you will find world-wide!

Making organic and biodynamic methods the heart of everything they do, Domaine de la Ville Rouge are at the forefront of the revolution in Crozes-Hermitage - taking what was a reliable if unexciting region and re-discovering its excellent terroir and old vines to create new, vibrant wines that demonstrate why the Northern Rhône is the best place in the world to grow Syrah!

About the wine

The Terre d'Eclat is a classy, elegant wine that demonstrates a vibrant Syrah character. A dark plum colour in the glass, on the nose it is aromatic and shows an intense perfume of blackberry and violets with a touch of pepper and bacon fat - quintessential notes of Northern Rhône Syrah! On the palate, it is rich, smooth and savoury with silky tannins and a refreshing acidity. Full of character, it finishes with a sense of minerality and a touch of black tea. There's an awful lot to this wine, but it doesn't stop it being supremely enjoyable at the same time! Definitely drinkable now (and hard to resist in fact), it should age well for the next 6 years or thereabouts.

To make the wine, a four-day cold soak was followed by a temperature controlled fermentation using only native yeasts and minimal sulphur use. The juice was extracted naturally without pressing at warm temperatures. A long maceration took place, prior to maturation in oak for 12 months.

About the winery

Located right at the heart of Crozes-Hermitage, this family Domaine was set up in 2006, although the farm itself has been in the family's hands since 1919.

It is run by Edgar and Jocelyne Girard and their son Sebastien. They produce top quality wines by combining traditional winemaking techniques and modern technology. The wines are produced organically with minimal sulphur. The estate has been certified organic since the 2012 vintage but is currently being converted to a full biodynamic regime.

All work is performed manually: de-budding, tying-up, green harvesting, the harvest and winter pruning. The grapes are sorted in the vineyard and on cellar sorting tables for a maximum yield of 35 hectoliters per hectare

About the vineyard

The Terre d'Eclat Crozes-Hermitage is produced from old vines (35 years +) grown organically in a single vineyard at the heart of the appellation. The soil is predominately clay-limestone but scattered with the large pebbles that are typical of the region and that provide good heat-retaining properties, helping the grapes to ripen perfectly.

91 Points - Jeb Dunnock
"Deeper and richer, the 2013 Crozes Hermitage Terre d'Éclat should be outstanding. Red currants, blackberry, bacon fat, leather and spice all emerge from this medium to full-bodied, gorgeously rich, concentrated and complex Crozes Hermitage. Aged all in older barrels, drink it through 2023."

4/5 Stars - John Livingstone Learmonth
"sober dark plum colour; has a bright, lifted blackberry and floral aroma, joli drifts of violet. The palate sweeps along well, bears juiced black berry fruit with tannins that are mild at first, then take on a more powdered existence. This gives nicely exuberant, clear drinking, has good length, and is enjoyable Crozes red for some fun and friends."

"Excellent Crozes-Hermitage surely among the best of the appellation!"  5/5 Stars

"Superbly balanced on the palate...delicate and greatly structured. Very good."  4.5/5 Stars

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
