Until his untimely death in 2015, Domaine de la Mordorée’s Christophe Delorme was considered to be one of the very best winemakers in the Rhône. Under his guidance, Mordorée became one of the region's most dynamic estates.

The Domaine, named after the woodcock, even appears in Robert Parker’s 'The World’s Greatest Wine Estates’ where he states that they “produce the finest Liracs of the appellation”.

With a string of Châteauneuf-du-Papes rated 99 and even the magical 100 points by Robert Parker, this Lirac is a taste of what Mordorée do so well for just a third of the price. At just £16.15 per bottle it is excellent value for a wine that is drinking beautifully now but will age gracefully for the next decade.

2015 was a great vintage in the Rhône and comparisons were even made to legendary vintages such as 1947 and 1961. The almost perfect growing season produced grapes at the optimum level of maturity – ripe but balanced by a fresh acidity; concentrated yet retaining elegance.

It is the perfect vintage for wines like this excellent Lirac!

About the wine

Made from 40 year old vines, La Dame Rousse punches well above its slightly humble appellation - especially in a vintage as good as 2015. In the glass it is a dark dense red with aromas of black cherry and smoky, spicy notes lifted by a touch of violet. On the palate, this delicious Lirac is full-bodied and rich with fine, grippy tannins and a long finish balanced by a fresh acidity. Put it in a decanter for an hour and this is hard to resist. But it will age beautifully for the next 10 years plus.

La Dame Rousse is made from hand- harvested fruit. The grapes are 100% destemmed and undergo a long 30 days maceration with a maximum of 34°C temperature.

About the winery

Ideally situated at the crossroads of Provence and Languedoc, the Domaine de la Mordorée produces some of the greatest wines of the Rhône valley from Lirac, Tavel, Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Condrieu.

Known as one of the leading and most dynamic wine estates in the Southern Rhône Valley, Mordorée was run by the famed Christophe Delorme until his untimely death in 2015. Delorme founded Domaine de la Mordorée in 1986 along with his father, Francis and later his brother, Fabrice and expanded the estate from its orginal 12 acres to the 55 hectares that are grown today.

Christophe was known for his commitment to quality which manifested itself in an insistence on hand-harvesting (in regions such as Tavel where it was very unusual), and a solid belief in organic winegrowing and low yields. His approach paid off in spades. Robert Parker named Mordoree as one of his "World's Greatest Wine Estates' in the book of the same name and Mordoree's wines sell out year after year, despite hailing from some of the Rhône's less fashionable areas.

Since Christophe's death, the winemaking has been in the hands of the estimable Rémy Chauvet, who was cellarmaster for many years.

About the vineyard

The Domaine de la Mordorée’s vineyards in the Lirac appellation are located mainly in the the plateaus of Lirac and Tavel, Les Baumes, as well as an area called LesChâtaigniers, meaning the chestnut trees, which are quite unusual in those parts.

"The 2015 Lirac la Dame Rousse is a top effort from this appellation that has classic, mineral-laced aromas and flavors of blackberries, mulberries, crushed rocks, graphite and peppery herbs. Rich, full-bodied and concentrated, it has lively acidity, notable tannic grip and plenty of length on the finish, all suggesting it will evolve nicely."

4/5 Stars
"...dark red. Soaked cherries, raspberry fruit comes with style on the nose, a little reduction. It’s an ample bouquet, with jelly-like fruit. The palate gets off to a serious start; in with its juicy content comes some keen, wired tannin that drives its length. This is gourmand more than Protestant wine. The early fruit is succulent, pastille-like. This has good length, good potential, is a vigorous, upbeat Lirac."

"Excellent value for this week balanced wine. Cherry and black currant flavours. It's a nice cousin to a CNDP and Gigondas. Love it." 4/5 Stars

"This blend of Grenache and Syrah from the great La Mordorée is clearly one of the really best cuvees of the appellation...Enchanting nose of cooked dark fruits (cassis, mulberry), beautiful licorice and old leather, slightly meaty and minty. The mouth is smooth with rounded tannins and a good amount of acidity. Lots of dark fruits and spices, red apple, licorice and hints of coffee."  4 /5 Stars

"Great stuff and as close to a Ch-d-P as you get....Black currant, raspberry and liquorice dominate nose and palate...QPR for this would suggest a 4 star rating"  4/5 Stars

Other Offers

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
